Halting in my steps, I listened. The voice belonged to a woman.

“...I’m stuck here all night. Just go to bed without me tonight. I’ll wake you up when I get home in the morning.” She laughed some more and added, “Fine, your dick will be in my sweet, hot mouth tomorrow morning.”

I peered around a bend in the corridor and came across a young woman talking on the phone. She was dressed in the same red and black uniform like the other valets. A big smile spread on her lips as she listened on.

The sound of my approaching footsteps must’ve distracted her because she suddenly looked up. Her eyes widened in fear. Wrenching the phone away from her ear, she stared at me with trembling lips.

“I’m so sorry,” the young waitress moaned. “I know I’m not supposed to carry a phone here. It’s just that I’m seeing this new guy. Things are going so great that I didn’t want to mess it up.” She wrung her hands and shook her head. “It’s not an excuse...I know...I’m so sor—”

Standing before her, I extended my hand toward her, silently gesturing for her to drop the phone on my palm. The young stranger was so terrified, she obeyed without resisting.

“Go,” I said.

To my astonishment, she hurried away at once.

I stared at the phone in my hand.

It had beensoeasy to manipulate her into thinking I was someone who had power here. Her fear blinded her to everything.

I wondered why phones were contraband but a moment later, realized the reason behind her terror. Phones could capture photographs, conversations, and videos. The kind of people who’d gathered here tonight valued their privacy over everything else.

“No wonder she was terrified of being punished,” I murmured, still staring at the phone in my hand.

Maybe I was still half-blinded by lust.

Maybe the shy, timid girl in me was finally becoming brave.

Or maybe Callum’s absence in my life made me fearless.

Taking the phone, I dialed the old landline phone in my dad’s bedroom.

Lucia

Distant sounds of music and conversation came from the direction of the entrance hall. The beating of my heart sounded louder in my ears as I heard the ring of a phone on the line.

“Hello?” said a female voice.

“H—hello? Who is this?”

“Miss Lucia? Is that you?”

“Laura?”

“Yes,” she said in an urgent tone. “Thank God you called. Your dad needs to be taken to a hospital right away. He’s having trouble breathing and nothing’s helping.”

Laura was a middle-aged woman who worked alongside our housekeeper. Her presence in my dad’s room made me anxious at once.

“Did you call Dr. Patel?” I asked.

“Dr. Patel is no longer his doctor,” said Laura. “Mr. Baldwin let go of all the staff in the house. We don’t even have a nurse here anymore. I’m the only one remaining here to take care of your father.”

“Why don’t you call emergency services?”

“I was going to but you’ve got to come home, Miss Lucia,” she said in an urgent, anxious tone. “Your father is suffering from a lot of complications. I would be of no help when the hospital staff asks me about his medical history. It’s important for you to be here. He needs you right now.”

“I can’t come.”
