“Do you have everything you need for the evening?” she asked as we reached the third floor.

I thought of the gorgeous gown hanging in my room and the lavish spread of makeup products, jewelry, and perfumes crowding my vanity table.

“Yeah,” I said as pure excitement zinged through me. “I can’t wait for tonight.”

Lilja gave me a sideways glance and chuckled. “You’re such a naive little doll,” she said in a soft voice. “Don’t get too excited over all this. Stay on guard. It’s a party but the men coming here tonight are all cold-blooded reptiles. They’re all killers and murderers. Don’t get swept away by their looks and perfect smiles.”

Her warning shattered my imagination.

It doesn’t matter though, I thought, stepping into my room. It’s going to be different from the parties I was forced to attend at home.

I was used to walking around and smiling at the men Callum brought home. Their faces were clean-shaved and glowing with health but their eyes were shadowed with the weight of their sins.

A heavy sigh escaped me as the door was closed and locked from outside.

I walked toward the bed and sat down on the edge. The gala was still hours away, so I had plenty of time to get ready. Picking up the TV remote, I switched on Netflix and settled down for a re-watch of The Vampire Diaries.

My gaze stayed fixed on my reflection in the tall, gilded mirror.

The champagne-colored gown I wore shimmered with my every move. The deep, plunging neckline highlighted my cleavage as well as the large emerald amulet at my throat.

I turned around, taking in the deep-cut back of the gown. Gold sequins, covering the bodice, glittered under the glow of lamps.

Turning back toward the mirror, I extended my right leg and watched the split part away to reveal my thigh. The gown was sexy-as-sin, highlighting my every curve.

A smile lifted the corners of my ruby-painted lips. This was the sexiest thing I’d ever worn. The Volkov brothers were still my captive but I never felt freer.

The long length of my raven-black tresses was fashioned into a messy bun. Thin tendrils framed my face and neck. Tiny pearls and diamonds glimmered in my dark hair.

I was bold with my choice of makeup. Callum always preferred demureness over sexiness. Free of his overbearing presence, I opted for smoky eyes and even added a hint of gold shimmer under my lower lashes.

I was admiring my matching stilettos when the sound of an opening door made me turn away from the mirror.

The Volkovs stood at my threshold, looking otherworldly in their lavish attires.

Yakim, Leon, and Mikhail were dashing in their black tuxes. Their tall heights and broad shoulders were further accentuated by their tailored suits. Lilja stood at the center, looking stunning in a crimson mermaid gown that was heavily covered in shimmering black beads and stones.

They’re more mesmerizing than the vampires on TV, I thought dazedly as they all grinned at me.

“You look amazeballs!” Lilja breathed, breaking away from her brothers. “You should dress up like this every day.”

“You look amazing too,” I said with a broad smile. “But, don’t wear this every day. You’ll have guys falling at your feet.”

A trilling laugh escaped her as she struck a pose.

“Stop!” Mikhail drawled. “You’ll embarrass us if you strut around like that.”

“Don’t listen to him,” I muttered.

Lilja winked at me and threw an arm around my shoulder. “Ready?”

“Yeah.”

“Remember to be on your guard,” she whispered in my ear. “Although, you don’t have to worry much. My brothers can’t bear to take their eyes off you, so you’ll be safe.”

I looked in the front and was immediately captured by Yakim’s piercing blue eyes. A smile rose on my lips. His scars didn’t affect me anymore.

I looked over at Leon next. His flaming curls fell into his amber eyes, making him look like a vampire prince from my fantasies. My gaze was drawn to the tiny skull tattoo under his right eye as he winked at me.
