For a moment, I didn’t even understand what she was talking about. Why did she have to feel sorry about giving me the best gift I could’ve asked for? She made love to me while staring at my ruined face.

A moment later, I heard the shallow drip-drip of something trickling down from the counter. Turning my head, I saw a big bowl of upturned chocolate sauce. Now that I was fully able to focus, I realized the liquid was too thick to be a sauce.

“Is that cake batter?” I asked.

She turned her head to gaze at me. “Yeah,” she moaned. “I wanted to make a four-tier chocolate cake. Guess, it’s just going to be a single tier one.”

I stared at her incredulously. “Was that all you were thinking about?”

She suddenly chuckled and turned on her side to face me. “I didn’t even care when you were inside me,” she said with a naughty grin. “But now...” She let out a sigh. “I’ll have to clean it all up. At least, there’s still going to be cake.”

I sat up and looked around. “I can do it for you.”

Pushing herself into a sitting position, she stared at me. “Really?”

I smiled and grabbed the pieces of her clothing that had fallen on the floor. “Let’s go to your room,” I said. “I’ll clean up the mess here while you take a shower.”

Her emerald eyes glowed with happiness. Moving closer to me, she pressed her lips to mine. “Thank you.”

Warmth flowed through me as I watched her getting dressed. I finally dared to believe Lucia could want me as much as my flawless brothers.

The kitchen looked neat and clean. A heavy, decadent smell pervaded the space as the cake I’d put in the oven earlier continued to bake. There were no traces of the mess we’d made earlier. It was as if nothing happened here at all!

I looked toward the counter. Everything was still there, including the cut-out cookies I’d laid out on a tray to decorate.

“Thanks,” I said, glancing up at Yakim. “No one’s going to know anything.”

His blue eyes shone with warmth. The scars on his face twisted horribly but I knew he was smiling.

“I’ll put those cookies in to bake too,” I said, moving toward the counter.

He came with me, standing beside me while I sprinkled the cookies with chocolate chips and chopped nuts.

“How long will it take for the cake to bake?” Yakim asked as I started clearing away the counter.

“Not long now,” I said. “Maybe another five minutes?” A thought came to me and I grabbed his arm suddenly. “Is everyone here today?”

His brows rose questioningly. “Why?”

“Nothing tastes better than hot chocolate cake and coffee,” I said with a smile. “If everyone’s around, we can gather around the table and have some.”

“Put the coffee on,” he said, taking his phone out. “I’ll get them here.” With that, he walked out of the kitchen.

I looked around and found a modern coffee maker. Moving toward it, I saw it was ready to use. Instead of switching it on right away, I decided to set the table first.

“They’ll be here soon,” said Yakim.

“Do flowers grow here?”

“What?”

I straightened, fixing my gaze on him. “Is there a garden here? I want to have some flowers on the table.”

“There’s barely much in this weather,” he said. “But, I could go out and take a look. Some of the last roses might be blooming now.”
