“You’re so cute right now,” he said, smiling. Leaning in, he captured my lips between his.

The kiss was soft and sweet.

“Claim me, Milla,” he said in a suddenly rough voice. “I don’t want to belong to any other woman.”

My heart pounded in my chest as I stared into his intense gaze.

“Leave the past behind, darling,” he spoke in a deep voice. “Don’t hurt yourself anymore. Be happy again.”

Sadness pinched my heart.

Leaning in, he rested his forehead against mine.

The gesture was intimate. Warm.

My eyes closed as our breaths mingled together.

I relaxed, wanting this moment to last forever.

The buzz of a cellphone sounded between us, breaking us apart. Caleb moved away and took out his phone from inside his jacket.

“Hey. What’s up?” he spoke into the phone. “Milla? Yeah, she’s with me.”

There was a moment’s pause.

“Don’t worry. We’ll be there now.”

Switching off the call, he glanced at me. “It’s time,” he said, his luscious lips curving into a warm smile. “It’s time for your coronation, princess.”

I stood on the same dais where a bucket of rotting pig’s blood was tipped over my head. The crowd had laughed and showered me with jibes and insults.

Tonight’s gathering didn’t look so different from the one five years ago.

The majority of the crowd still consisted of older men and women in their finest clothes and jewelry, all waiting for a drama to unfold.

“Please join me in welcoming Azalea,” Brian’s voice boomed all around the vast hall.

Polite claps rose from the crowd.

Brian’s warm smile kept me relaxed as I crossed the stage to reach him.

“She has single-handedly established Azalea Tech. in the electronic industry and made it a market leader in the span of five years,” Brian declared, his voice giddy with pride. “I can’t think of anyone who’s as deserving of taking my place at Amhurst Co. as its new CEO.”

The sound of clapping grew harder.

I smiled, but deep inside I felt the weight of responsibilities I’d taken upon myself.

Brian patted my shoulder before turning back to the crowd. “Please join me in congratulating her.”

I took his place and stared out at the crowd. For a moment, I searched for a sliver of anxiety but there was none. At the end of the day, they were the same kind of people I’d dealt with in the past five years.

They were here to listen to me reassure them that their investments in Amhurst Co. were safe and about to be doubled soon.

It was just another day in my world.
