Without a word, he gave up on his sons.

We were sure he’d seen the damaging clip that Milla sent out to the world but he never mentioned anything to us.

Dad completely stopped bothering us.

He allowed us to take control over important subsidiaries of the business, even letting Noah manage his office. In a way, he gave up all control over us.

And now, he was about to resign and leave everything to us. We didn’t see this coming but perhaps, we should’ve expected it. Dad was no longer the same man after Eva’s death.

Guilt spread through me. It happened each time I was reminded of the poor, sweet woman and the way we treated her daughter, Milla.

“Who will take your place?” Corey asked with narrowed eyes. “Please tell me you’re not thinking about this dumbass.” He gestured toward Noah, earning a glare in return.

“It’s not up to me,” said Dad. “Of course, my recommendation will weigh considerably when it comes to choosing who will take my place.”

“Choosing?” Noah spoke up. “Out of the three of us, you’ve got to see that I’m the most dedicated to our growth.”

“You are,” Dad agreed. “But the board of directors has forwarded the name of another prospective contender for the post.”

“What?” Noah’s expression hardened.

“The investors have informed me they’re happy with the recommendation too,” said Dad mildly.

Noah jumped to his feet. “What are you talking about? Who wants to take over Amhurst Co. from me?”

My phone vibrated with another message from Corey.

Looking down, I saw a meme of a pathetically weeping Umbridge as she was dragged away by a group of centaurs. Also, Umbridge’s face had been swapped with Noah’s.

The Harry Potter reference immediately conjured up the image of a pretty young woman in a nerdy t-shirt and hoodie. They used to be Milla’s favorites.

I closed my eyes, momentarily lost in an onslaught of memories.

“Who is it, Dad?” Noah’s loud voice broke me out of my trance. “Who’s this person who thinks they can snatch this company’s control from our family?”

Dad smiled benignly while Noah looked ready to maul him. “Azalea is family.”

“Who?” Noah barked.

“Azalea Amhurst,” said Mrs. Schmidt, one of our senior managers. “That’s who you’re talking about, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” said Dad. “She’s done an excellent job of probing our way into the IT field. Amhurst Co. has become a household name among the firms of Silicon Valley in California, all thanks to her.”

I sat straighter, suddenly interested in this person. The mere mention of her name shook Noah. On the other side of the table, Corey watched our brother with an amused grin.

“Why haven’t I heard of her before?” Noah muttered.

“You’re too obsessed with what’s right in front of you,” said Dad. “Not that it’s a bad thing. You’re laser-focused on maintaining our position in the construction business. However, it’s important to innovate and see which other directions we can expand Amhurst Co. Innovation and development are key qualities that we’re all looking for in the next CEO of this company.”

“She’s never been to the headquarters, has she?” Mrs. Schmidt asked conversationally.

“No,” said Dad. “She’s been focusing all her efforts into establishing a base in LA for us.”

“I heard she’s really young too,” said Mr. Drummonds, an important investor.

“Yes, I believe so,” said Dad.

Noah stayed quiet, listening to everyone’s remark about the woman who was about to stand in his way. He maintained a cold, impassive façade but I could tell he was simmering with rage inside.
