We’ve wasted so much precious time, I realized as she poured my brother some coffee.

After hearing the life our dad...Brian...ugh! It was so hard to think of him as anything but DAD!

Our mother lived a miserable life and died a painful, bitter death.

She could’ve chosen to be happy. She could’ve chosen another man who’d make her happy.

Instead, she chose vengeance and hatred, spoiling all our lives in the process.

Neither Caleb nor I wanted to live that way. We’d already decided that when Milla left us. It took Noah a little longer to come around but he was on the same page as us now.

Noah finally understood the importance of having love in his life. He was finally giving up on his obsession with the things Mom left behind. She’d lied to him about so many things to exact stupid promises from him.

Amhurst Co. didn’t belong to the three of us alone. Milla had a claim to it as well.

Eva tried to make things right for her daughter. Marrying our dad at the end of her life was her last resort to leave Milla with a family. She even spared us the pain and angst of finding out about our mother.

Even Eva turned out to be a better person than our mom. The fact made it even harder for us to forgive ourselves. We’d never stop feeling guilty over the way we treated her daughter.

I gazed over at Milla.

She sat opposite to us, watching us with concern-filled eyes.

We didn’t deserve her kindness, but we needed it for our own survival. She was the only anchor in this sea of angst that was drowning us.

“I’m stuffed,” said Caleb as he put down his fork.

“Are you sure?” Milla asked. “I can make more food.”

“Weren’t you going to make dinner for Dad?” I asked. “I thought you wanted us all to eat together.”

“Yeah, that’s what I was planning,” she said. “Are you sure you guys can wait until we eat again?”

“Yep,” said Caleb. “Mind if I took up your sofa? I need a nap after all that food.”

A twinge of worry flared inside me.

Caleb looked thoroughly exhausted. He’d been coming to work despite being an emotional wreck over the past couple of days. I doubted he got any sleep at night too.

“You can take the bed,” said Milla, pushing her chair back and standing up. Glancing over at me, she asked, “What about you, Corey? Want a nap too?”

“Nah. I’m good. Maybe a shower later on?”

She gave a nod and grabbed my brother’s arm. “Come on, you big baby,” she said, dragging him out of the kitchen.

Caleb chuckled. This was the first time he’d smiled after hearing about our mom’s truth.

Closing my eyes, I leaned against the chair’s backrest.

It was so easy to let go of everything when Milla was around. Only she had the strength to pull us back from the brink of utter devastation.

Noah was starting to understand that too.

We were all beginning to get back to our old selves.

We hadn’t fought between ourselves ever since Dad fell ill. Somehow, we’d gotten back to having each other’s backs again.

None of this would’ve been possible if Milla didn’t come back to us.
