“How are you, Dad?” Corey asked in an anxious tone.

“Exhausted but the docs say I’ll be fine.”

“Of course, you’ll be fine,” said Caleb in a hoarse voice. “You can’t leave us yet. We still need you, Dad.”

Dad slowly sat up. Caleb bent forward to help him and supported his back with a pillow.

Dad finally looked over at me. “Why are you standing so far away, Noah? Come over here.”

I dragged my feet toward his bed and sat down on a chair.

“We didn’t finish our conversation,” said Dad.

My expression must’ve turned as alarmed as my brothers’.

Milla sat up straighter and brushed away her tears.

Dad grabbed Milla’s wrist and looked into her tear-filled eyes. “Milla...I’m your father.”

“You mean, you’re like my dad?”

“No, kiddo. I’m your real father.”

Ice flowed through my veins at his confession.

“Milla is our half-sister?” Corey whispered, all color draining from his face.

“No, she’s not,” said Dad.

“Our mother gave birth to her?” Caleb asked, looking stunned. “Are you saying she’s our real sister?”

“Of course, she’s not,” said Dad, looking calm while the rest of us were ready to smash our heads on the wall. “Milla is Eva and my child.”

“That makes her our half-sister,” I said as my gut churned sickeningly.

Dad let out a long breath. “I’m sorry, Noah.” He glanced over at my brothers. “I’m sorry, Caleb. Corey. It’s time to tell you the truth. I can’t have you building obnoxious ideas about my relationship with Milla anymore. I’m her biological father, but not yours.”

Complete silence fell over the room.

“Huh?” A breathless whisper escaped me.

“What are you saying?” Caleb asked in a low voice. “You’re Milla’s father, but not ours?”

Dad nodded.

“So, we’re not siblings inanyway?” Corey whispered.

“No, you’re not,” said Dad.

“How long have you known?” Milla asked.

“I’ve known since the day you were born,” said Dad.

Milla’s expression crumpled. Thick tears rolled down her pale cheeks as hacking, choking sobs started escaping her.

“I’m sorry, kiddo,” said Dad. “I’m sorry about everything. You can hate me if you want.”

Pained noises escaped her. Clamping the back of her hand to her mouth, she shook her head rapidly.
