My heart thundered in my ears as I walked out of the room. The effects of the drugs Corey used on me were wearing off but I still felt lightheaded.

Reaching the end of the long corridor, I stopped and took a moment to simply breathe.Calm down, I told myself, gritting my teeth against the headache knocking on my forehead.

Gradually, the feeling receded but my heart continued pounding in my chest.

I was sure I’d have to fight them to get away. Enmity was the only thing I expected from the Amhurst brothers after revealing myself and my intention in the boardroom meeting that morning.

How could they letmesnatch everything away from them?

I’d been ready for their attack. That was the reason I brought Tom and Greg to the board meeting with me.

To my astonishment, they still managed to kidnap me from the headquarters of Amhurst Co. in broad daylight. Not only that, they even managed to bring me all the way to a suite in The Orchid.

The surprises didn’t stop there though.

Corey and Caleb didn’t hurt me at all.

Instead, they let me beat Corey up mercilessly. They even offered me coffee the way I liked it and promised to help me get the CEO position.

My head rang with the conversation we just had. It seemed too good to be true. Could I trust them?

They helped you once before and hid you from Noah,my mind whispered, reminding me of the time when they took me away to a secluded cottage by a lake.

Those few weeks of study break was the only time I truly felt safe and protected with Corey and Caleb. They kept their promise to me back then, never letting Noah know where I was.

They were capable of making their own decisions and going against Noah, but were they serious about itnow?Could I trust them to actively go against their brother?

There was a part of me that wanted to believe in them. It would make things so much easier now and in the future.

Brian wanted me to make peace with them so I could run Amhurst Co. after getting the CEO position. Any kind of settlement with Noah was impossible but maybe I could try something with Corey and Caleb.

An emotion close to hope swelled inside me.

“Five years,” I spat, letting out a rough, wild chuckle. “Five years and I’m still such a sucker.”

I hated how easily they bored through my defenses. Corey and Caleb still held pieces of my heart in their fists.

Taking several deep breaths, I willed my heart to calm down. They’d used their charm on me before and betrayed me.

They’ll have to prove themselves to me, I decided right then.

The door to a room opened and a well-dressed elderly couple walked out. They both stared at me and I was forced to move forward.

Eventually, I followed them down the corridor and found myself before an elevator. The elderly woman kept glancing at me, making me nervous. I had no idea what I looked like right now.

When the elevator doors opened, I stepped in first and scooted to the very back.

The mirror on the back wall immediately showed me my messy appearance.

Strands of my blond hair escaped its ponytail and framed my face with untidy locks. My eye makeup was badly smudged, making me resemble a raccoon. The hot pink shade of my lipstick was smeared on the corner of my mouth.

Coupled with my badly crumpled suit, I looked like a woman on her walk of shame. No wonder the elderly couple seemed wary of me. They probably suspected me to be a hooker.

Thankfully, it was only a few torturous minutes before the elevator stopped on the ground floor. I walked out after them and quickly looked around for a restroom.

Turning into another hallway, I finally located a bathroom and headed inside. My handbag was missing, so I was left with no option but to use my fingers and water from a faucet to neaten my hair.

Using wet tissues, I cleaned up my smudged makeup.
