Corey took out his phone from his pocket and stared down at the flashing screen. “It’s Caleb,” he said in a low, grim tone.

Both Brian and I stared up at him.

Corey picked up the call and held the phone in his palm so we could all hear Caleb.

“Hey, what’s up?” Corey asked at once.

“Noah’s going to live,” Caleb’s relieved voice came through the phone. “Bless his fucking balls, our brother’s going to live.”

“Is he out of surgery?” I asked.

“Not yet,” said Caleb. “But one of the surgeons came out to tell me that the bullet passed through his shoulder blade. He has bone fragments and ruptured tissues. They’ll take time to heal but he’ll live.”

Brian squeezed his eyes and pumped his fists, silently saying a prayer.

“We’ll get there soon,” I said.

“Milla? Don’t do that,” said Caleb in a grim tone. “The cops are on their way right now. They want to take your statement. Tell them everything that happened from the moment you were attacked last night. Make sure you give them enough so that Luke continues to stay behind bars on charges of assault and kidnapping.”

“We’ll stay home with her for now,” said Brian. “We’ll all be waiting for you here.”

“Dad? You’re there too?” Caleb asked.

“Yeah. Thanks for letting us know Noah’s going to be okay. We were about to rush over there.”

“There’s no point,” said Caleb. “He’ll be under heavy anesthetics after the surgery. It’s better to come later when he’s able to receive visitors.”

“What about you, Son?” Brian asked. “Are you okay?”

“I’m absolutely fine,” said Caleb. “It’s Milla and Noah who endured everything.”

A relieved breath escaped me. I silently prayed, thanking the heavens for keeping Noah safe.

A weight seemed to lift off me and I felt like I could finally breathe.

I could feel the effects of adrenaline ebbing away, leaving my body feeling battered and exhausted. The mere thought of what I’d just escaped finally took hold of me.

Tears rolled down my cheeks as Caleb and Brian continued speaking to Caleb.

Irene noticed. Moving close to me, she gently brushed my tears away.

The kind gesture made me cry harder. Bending down, I hugged her soft, warm body, feeling grateful to be with her.

Every person dear to me was safe and alive. I washome.

If Luke and his father went ahead with their plans, I’d have lost everything precious to me. It was nothing short of a miracle to have escaped from their clutches.

Hugging Irene to me, I looked over at Caleb and Brian. The very sight of them was enough to send waves of relief through me. I gazed around the room where we spent uncountable evenings with each other.

I’m home, my mind whispered again, relieving me from every fear and worry.

Shafts of early morning sunshine came in through the windows, casting a warm glow all around the room. Irene was still in bed and gently snoozing as I looked out into the grounds.

Spring was here.
