“Help me put it on,” I said, struggling to hook it at the back of my neck.

Noah stood up from his chair and came behind me to help me.

Our waitress came with our food at that moment. A confused look came over her as she wordlessly stared at my tear-stained face while Noah stood hooking a necklace behind me.

“It’s okay,” I assured her. “These are happy tears.”

She gave an awkward smile and rushed away.

“It looks beautiful on you,” said Noah as his gaze fixed on the pendant on my chest. “I’m glad I bought it back then. It’s a magic pendant, Milla. You’re here with me. I can touch you and kiss you. You don’t hate me anymore and can bear to eat a meal with me at the same table. Only magic can explain how it’s all happening.”

Warmth flooded through me. The big, bad Noah Amhurst was saying he believed in magic. Did I die and go to heaven and just wasn’t aware of it?

Rising from my chair, I hugged him tightly.

Noah’s arms wrapped around my body, holding me close.

None of us knew when or how it happened, but our wounds seemed to be slowly healing.

“I can’t wait to introduce Irene to the magic of Hogwarts,” I said, gazing up at him.

Noah’s silvery eyes sparkled with mirth. “Spare her, Milla.”

I grinned and shook my head. “Let’s eat!”

Noah and I went back to our seats and attacked the steaming, hot food laid out before us.

As usual, the restaurant’s chicken soup warmed me up instantly, sending a burst of energy through my tired body.

The steamed dumplings were flavored delicately and the thin, translucent wrappers melted in my mouth, and I almost moaned at the bite of the sauce-coated pork belly.

Noah and I stayed quiet for most of the meal as we hurried to eat all the delicious food before us.

“I’m stuffed,” I said with a satisfied sigh after half an hour. “Wouldn’t it be great if the restaurant was a hotel and we could just go into a room and sleep?”

Noah chuckled. “I know, but come on, do you want to miss seeing Irene in the morning?”

“Nah. I want to see her tonight even if she’ll be asleep by the time we reach home.”

I noticed the generous tip Noah left on the table as he stood up to grab his jacket. Feeling thoroughly warmed up, I headed out of the restaurant and looked up at the clear night sky.

I hadn’t felt this happy in a long, long time.

Noah’s hand clasped mine. “Let’s go home,” he said, gesturing toward the spot where our car was parked.

I followed him to his car and soon we were on our way home.

Away from the bustling, well-lit area of Raydon Square, I realized how late it was. The streets at this hour were completely deserted and the glow from the streetlamps was almost eerie.

Suddenly, I couldn’t wait for us to be home.

The car suddenly came to a halt, jerking me forward.

“Are you okay?” I asked, looking up at Noah.

Noah didn’t reply. His gaze was fixed on something further ahead on the road.

Following the direction of his gaze, I looked at the three monstrous trucks blocking our path. The glass windows were tinted, giving us no idea who was behind the wheels of these vehicles.
