“We’re here,” Noah’s voice made me look up.

It was always a surprise how time flew when I was engrossed in work.At least, I didn’t get bored while being stuck in traffic, I thought, smiling internally. Noah did all the hard work of navigating through the early morning traffic.

Noah and I separated after reaching the upper management quarters.

Heading to my office, I found Mallory typing away something on her computer. Two new recruits worked in the same space now.

They both greeted me as I passed by.

Entering my office, I took off my jacket and sat down at my desk.

I got to work by selecting the pile of folders that were from the Eastern Corridor project. Nick took off a massive weight off my shoulder by clearing the obstacles in my way.

With nothing to stress over anymore, I found my usual pace and energy returning back to me.

I didn’t even know how much time passed away until my cell phone rang up, forcing me to break away from the work I was engrossed in. Annoyed, I grabbed my phone.

The screen flashed with the name and image of an old friend.

My annoyance vanished at once.

Picking up the call, I answered, “Hey, Juniper.”

“You’ve completely forgotten about me,” Juniper complained. I could almost imagine the pout on her pretty face. “Is Silverlake City that interesting? I thought you hated the place.”

“A lot’s been going on here,” I said in a grim tone.

“I heard,” she said. “You’re the new CEO of Amhurst Co. How did you get the position so quickly? Was it that easy to beat down your horrible stepbrothers?”

A small chuckle escaped me.

Juniper was a chairperson of a major IT company herself. We became friends after I rescued her from being taken advantage of at a party in LA.

Someone drugged her drink at the party. I was the only person to notice how the sophisticated, serious-faced woman had suddenly turned into a giggling, tottering mess. Her eyes had gone wide and hazy from the effects of the drug, but again, no one seemed to notice as a man dragged her out of the banquet hall.

Back then, I had both Tom and Greg guarding me. With them by my side, I had no trouble confronting the man.

Within minutes, Juniper was in my arms and security was dragging the assaulter away.

Since that night, Juniper turned into a close friend. We met up for drinks and food whenever we could find the time in our busy schedules.

I told her about my life in Silverlake City during one of those night outs. That’s how she knew about Noah, Corey and Caleb and my enmity with them.

“They gave up everything to me,” I said, returning my attention back on my friend. “Brian was already keen to give me his position. So, everything happened smoothly without any hassle.”

“How did that happen?” she asked in a surprised voice. “You were so sure that Noah guy would fight you to death over the control of Amhurst Co.”

“You’re going to have to come to Silverlake City to hear the whole story,” I said. “When can you make the time, babe?”

“Why won’t you come back to LA?”

“I’m too busy handling a project that was nearly sabotaged by a competitor,” I said in a grim tone. “Failing is not an option right now. Do you know they even tried to kill me and Noah? I have no proof but I’m sure it was them.”

Juniper was silent for a moment. “That’s the reason I called.”

“What?”

“You know how I’ve kept the internet from knowing any personal details about you?” she asked.
