“Milla,” Caleb’s tight voice sounded close to me. “You’ve got to come see this.”

I looked up at him, taking in his deadly serious expression.

“We’ll check up on your parents, okay?” I told the child.

“My parents are dead,” she repeated.

“The two men in here don’t look like her parents,” Caleb said in a grim tone.

“I’ll be right back,” I told her and straightened up.

“This is so fucked up,” Caleb muttered under his breath as he led me toward the car.

“Are they all dead inside?”

“They’re dead all right but this shit’s even more messed up than that.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You’ll see.”

Reaching the car, he gestured for me to take a look inside.

I looked through the cracked windows, catching sight of two unmoving bodies in the front passenger seats.

A closer look sent a chill through me.

The driver’s back was drenched in dark crimson while the man sitting next to him had a small knife jutting out from the back of his neck. I whirled around to look at the child still sitting on the ground and then back up at Caleb.

“Someone murdered them,” I whispered.

Caleb grabbed my arm and pulled me away from the car. Gesturing toward the kid, he hissed. “It was her.”

I stared at him disbelievingly.

“I saw her hands,” he urged. “They were covered in blood.”

“That doesn’t mean anything,” I hastily whispered back.

“She’s a psycho.”

I frowned. “She’s just a child. Look at her. She’s barely older than eight. There’s no way she could’ve done that to two grown men. Get a hold of yourself, Caleb. She’s hurt and scared.”

“Fine, but we better be careful with her.”

I grabbed his hand and squeezed. “Please, Caleb. Let me talk to her before coming to any wild conclusion.”

“Okay,” he agreed with a grim look. “But I’m watching our backs.”

I gave a nod and went back to the place where the girl in the red dress was sitting.

She wasn’t crying anymore. A calm, curious expression spread on her thin face. She gazed up at me with big, trusting blue eyes and my insides melted immediately.

I went to sit next to her, not caring about dirtying my clothes.

“We’re going to help you, okay?” I said in a gentle voice.

She gave a nod.
