Together, we headed out of the diner. The night air was even chillier now.

Reaching my car in the parking lot, I unlocked the doors. Noah slid into the passenger side seat while I climbed in behind the wheel.

“I can’t wait to go home and dump my body in my bed,” I said as the car moved out of the parking lot.

Noah chuckled. “Keep your eyes open, ma’am.”

There was barely any traffic this late at night, allowing me to speed up.

Nothing seemed odd until half an hour passed.

No matter how steadily I held the steering wheel, the car seemed to have a mind of its own, and kept trying to go sideways. To my horror, the problem worsened steadily.

“Milla...” Noah’s voice was full of warning.

“I know,” I bit out. “I don’t know what’s wrong with it.”

“Milla, watch out!”

I stared wide-eyed, my mind scrambling to come up with a way to stop the collision that was seconds away from happening. I put all my strength onto the brakes but the car barely slowed.

“Milla!” Noah shouted. “Stop the car right now.”

“I’m trying—”

Adrenaline pumped through me as I fought with the steering wheel. The car swung off the road, bumping on the rough, uneven terrain, taking us into the wooded area that lined the highway.

Bushes and low-hanging branches thrashed against the windshield.

“Hold on!” I screamed as the car trundled uncontrollably in the dark. My shouts were barely audible over the sound of breaking branches and crunching stone and soil.

Please let Noah be safe, I said a silent prayer while my wide, terror-stricken mind struggled to find a way to stop the car.

The car’s bumper hit something hard, jerking us both forward. My body flew out of my seat but my tightened seatbelt provided safety, jerking me back into place. In that split second, I still managed to hit my head against the dashboard, the pain keeping me in a dazed haze.

Gentle hands patted my cheek.

“Milla?” Noah’s anxious voice sounded very close to me. “Hey...Milla.”

A groan escaped me as I tried to sit up. Sometime during the collision, I managed to hurt my back as well.

“Look at me,” Noah demanded. “Milla, open your eyes.”

Weren’t they open?I thought dazedly.

Slowly, I forced my eyelids to move.

A dark shape loomed over me.

“Noah?” I whispered, unable to tell if I was dreaming.

“Thank god.” He moved over me, helping me take off my seatbelt. “Can you move?”

Loud groans escaped my lips as I tried to sit up. “Yeah...I think so...” Every movement sent spasms of pain through my back and legs. “What about you?” I asked, looking over at him in the dark.
