“It was a long shot anyway,” said Noah in a grim tone. “I just can’t believe you’ve willingly gone to talk to such dangerous criminals on your own in the past.”

“I did what I had to.”

“Well, I’m not letting you do anything on your own anymore. No matter the risk, we’ll share it between us from now on.” His silvery eyes shone with sincerity.

Warmth stole through me as I gazed at the man before me. How could he be the same person I hated with such passion? How could he make me smile so effortlessly?

A loud ringing noise brought me out of my daze.

Noah reached inside his jacket and brought out his phone.

“It’s Caleb,” he said, picking up the call. “I’m putting him on speaker.”

I gave a nod as he placed the phone on the table.

“Where are you?” Caleb’s rushed whisper sounded at once.

“I’m at a diner,” Noah replied. “Milla’s with me.”

Loud sighs of relief came from the other end.

“Thank, fuck,” said Caleb. We heard Corey’s voice in the background where he was pestering Caleb for Noah’s answer. “Why didn’t you guys text or call us the moment you got out? You promised you would.” His voice steadily grew louder. “Do you have any idea how worried we’ve been? Did you at least call Dad?”

“No,” Noah answered in a quiet voice. “We’ve just stopped on our way back. Milla and I needed a minute to chill and get our minds in order. We were about to call you guys anyway.”

“Nope!” Caleb sounded angry. “Not a good enough excuse for making us wait so long.”

Noah glanced at me.

“We’re sorry, Caleb,” I said. “Civella’s men kind of chased us away. We didn’t stop to think or talk until now. I didn’t even know I had to use the bathroom until we got out of the car.”

“Milla? What happened to you guys? Are you okay?” A sound of struggle erupted in the background. “Fine,” Caleb suddenly bit out. “I’m putting them on speaker.”

“Milla?” Corey’s worried voice sounded next. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” I said. “We’re both fine.”

“Why is it so noisy?” Noah asked, picking up on the sound of more people talking in the background. “Aren’t you two home?”

“Nah,” said Caleb in a calmer voice. “Dad sent us to attend the inaugural opening of the Kenilworth Hotel in Jersey City. I doubt we’ll be able to make it home tonight, so won’t be able to see you guys before tomorrow.”

“That’s cool,” said Noah. “It’ll be late by the time we reach home too.”

“What happened with the meeting?” Corey asked.

“We got nothing,” I said with a disappointed moan. “Civella likes Silverlake City because the mayor’s an ass who likes to cover up all criminal cases in our town. I offered him money and he said he’d think about it. As of now, I don’t know if he’ll come around.”

“Give it a few days,” said Noah.

“Why did he chase you guys away?” asked Caleb.

“He threatened to lock her up in his dungeon,” Noah said through clenched teeth. His eyes turned a shade darker as he balled his hands into tight fists.

“That’s it,” said Corey. “You’re not going near that man again.”

“Stop worrying about it,” I said. “He was just trying to scare me.”

“I don’t think so,” said Caleb in a grim tone. “No one jokes about shit like that.”
