“Milla, don’t be—” Eva spoke up, looking upset.

“It’s all right,” Dad cut in. “We’ve been hurrying along with everything. She needs time to adjust. Give her some space, honey.”

Corey and Caleb glanced at me. I knew what they were thinking. Our dad never considered giving us any time and space.

Jealousy, rage, and desire battled inside my chest. No other person created such a storm inside me before, driving me nearly insane.

I didn’t want to hurt Milla. Not really.

She was simply unlucky. My brothers and I had no other outlet for our rage and hatred. She was so easy to manipulate. So easy to bend and break.

Power and lust. That’s what she incited in us.

She was an easy prey among a group of hungry predators. It was only natural for her to be devoured by us.

Milla pushed back her chair and quickly walked out of the room.

I looked over at the ornamental clock hanging on the opposite wall. It was already close to nine.

“She should at least spend the night here,” I said, looking directly at Eva. “She shouldn’t be out this late around here. It gets pretty deserted and it’s not safe for her.”

“Noah’s right,” said Dad.

Eva gave a nod, trying not to let her daughter’s behavior ruin the evening.

“She’s not going anywhere tonight,” said Eva firmly. “I know a lot is changing for her but she needs to accept them. Sooner the better.”

I relaxed.

Milla was going to be all mine tonight.

Mom insisted I spent the night in Brian’s home, forcing me to stay in the bedroom she’d prepared for me. Personally, I hated this room, the very place the three Amhurst brothers betrayed me.

No matter what the room made me feel, the soft, warm bed lulled me to a deep sleep. I wore a silken night gown, one of the many clothes Mom bought me and filled the gigantic closet in the corner. The fabric added another layer of comfort.

I was luxuriously warm under the thick blanket wrapped over me. Coupled with the heavy exertion of the evening, I was sound asleep as soon as I switched off the lights.

I didn’t know how long I’d been asleep before my eyes blinked open to the dimly lit room. A cold draft skimmed over my bare legs. At the same time, I felt a rush of warm air over my belly.

I stirred.

My shifting body hit something hard. Alert, I tried to sit up but a massive body rose over me, pushing me back on the pillow.

“Lie still,” Noah’s deep voice penetrated the quiet stillness of the room.

“What are you doing here?” I gasped as panic gripped me. “Get off me!” As far as I remembered, I’d locked the door before going to bed. How could he still find a way in here?

Noah’s legs straddled mine, forcing me to stay on the bed.

I writhed under his weight but failed to throw him off. “Get off me or I’ll scream,” I threatened.

Noah’s large hand came to cover my mouth and nose.

Pitiful noises escaped me.
