ChapterTwenty-Nine

Eden

The bobbing of the waves made my eyes heavy.

The soft heat of the sun interspersed with overcast clouds soothed my body to rest. With my innertube floating aimlessly in the water just off the back porch, I grew thankful that I had tied my innertube to one of the stilts so that I wouldn’t float away.

Because the second darkness overcame me, I didn’t wake up until I heard Dominik bellowing over me.

“Eden!”

I jolted awake and almost damn near fell into the ocean. “What? What’s going on?”

“Get up. We’re leaving.”

I paused. “We’re what?”

As his heavy footfalls backtracked into the cabana, his words dawned upon my sleepy mind. Home? We were leaving a day early? But, why? I mean, not that I was complaining. Sure, I’d miss the view, but I absolutely wouldn’t miss having to tolerate that asshole’s presence.

He seemed a bit… eager, though.

Still, I untied the innertube and dragged it onto the sand. I hoisted it up the ramp toward the front door, and as I made my way inside, thunder started rumbling off in the distance. I looked toward the mainland and watched as low-growing storm clouds formed. Not quite flying weather, if anyone asked me about it.

However, as I discarded the sandy innertube in the small foyer of the cabana, my bag got dropped at my feet.

“Thanks?” I asked.

He charged past me. “Come on. We’re late.”

“Don’t I at least get a moment to change?”

Dominik didn’t even bother looking back at me. “You can change on the plane. We need to leave.”

“I take it there’s an emergency?”

He glared at me after tossing his bag into the back of the rental car. “Are you going to keep asking questions? Or are you coming with me?”

I shrugged. “Suit yourself.”

As I made my way down the ramp with my suitcase in hand, I craned my head over my shoulder. I took one last look at the positively outstanding view I’d miss back home. The concrete jungle of Los Angeles had nothing on tropical destinations such as The Maldives. There wasn’t an ounce of that place that I didn’t fully and completely admire, and in some ways, I also meant that basement of his. Despite the demeaning bullshit that occurred in that lower room, the glass walls really added a sort of mystical beauty I’d never experienced before.

“Eden!” he barked.

I groaned. “Jesus Christ, I’m coming. Don’t get your panties in a bunch.”

The ride to the tarmac was fraught with twists and turns. The man drove like a bat out of hell, and I knew that something awful had happened. Maybe it was a work emergency or something. I didn’t know. I’d contemplate about a personal emergency, but Dominik didn’t strike me as the kind of man that had any sort of a personal life for there to be emergencies in the first fucking place.

He skidded to a stop right at the base of the stairs leading up onto his jet, though, and it gave me pause.

“Is something wrong?” I asked.

Dominik slammed out of the door. “What makes you think that?”

I rolled my eyes. “You mean, other than the fact that you’re moving as fast as the Roadrunner?”

“Who the fuck is that?”

I snickered. “Of course, you wouldn’t know any fun and amazing references. Doesn’t shock me one bit.”
