I stormed through the kitchen, leaving a trail of water that I hoped made him slip. I hope he slipped, fell right onto his back, and fucking shattered his assbone. Maybe then, he’d leave me the fuck alone. Maybe then, he’d finally understand the helplessness he had forced upon me just to get his dick wet.

And as I slammed the bedroom door behind me, I flicked the lock closed for good measure.

Before my cell phone started ringing.

“Oh my God,” I groaned as I walked over to the bedside table, “who the hell needs me now?”

Only, when I saw my father was calling, my heart stopped in my chest. My father never called me on the phone. It simply wasn’t something he did.

And I couldn’t pick up the call quickly enough. “Dad? You okay? Is everything all right?”

“Uh, yeah?” he asked. “Just wanting to see how you were. Haven’t heard from you in a while.”

I furrowed my brow deeply. “You never call unless something’s wrong.”

“I’m missing my daughter. Can’t a man miss his daughter?”

I knew better than that. I knew my father better than that. If he ever needed to get in touch with me electronically, he always sent an email. Always. The last phone call I’d ever gotten from the man was over two years ago, back when Mom had broken her wrist and ended up in the E.R.

That was the last phone call I had received from him.

And I wasn’t an idiot.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” I asked.

His voice grew agitated. “Look, if you want me to go, I’ll--”

“No, no!” I said quickly as I perched my soaking wet ass on the edge of the bed. “It’s okay. I guess… I just want to make sure, you know?”

I knew that if I pressed him about it, he’d shut me out even more. So, I shoved my worries to the back of my mind as my father cleared his throat. If something was wrong, maybe I could pull it out of him during a nice conversation.

So, I drew in a deep, silent breath. “Whatcha up to?”

I heard him sip on something. “Just enjoying a cup of coffee. And don’t get on me about how late it is.”

I pulled my phone away and looked at the clock. It was nine-thirty in the morning, but with the time difference that I had already Googled multiple times, it was damn near ten at night back home.

And my worry only mounted. “Hey, you’re a grown man who can make his own decisions. I take it you had a hard day at the garage?”

He groaned. “You have no idea. It was a hellhole today at work. I had three different customers that came in with engine troubles to their car because of fucking pranks some dumbass kids are pulling in the neighborhood.”

“Uh oh. Sand or sugar?”

“Neither. It’s water this time. Can you believe that? Water! What the hell are these kids thinking?”

“It sounds insane, Dad. I’m so sorry. What did you end up doing? Did they need new engines after that?”

He took another sip of his drink. “Bah, it’s not for you to worry about. I’m just tired of these idiot kids thinking they can get away with shit like that because their parents work two and three jobs just to stay afloat. I swear, the world makes me so angry sometimes.”

I snickered. “You and me, both.”

“Honey, is that Eden!?”

I heard Mom’s voice in the background and smiled. “Tell Mom I said hey.”

“Tell her yourself,” he said before I heard a click on his end of the line.

And before I could say anything, Mom piped up. “Hey, sweetie! We miss you! You haven’t come by for the last couple of weekends. Em says you’re working? Got another high-profile case?”
