“Is this the point where you bore me with the details?”

He nodded. “Yep.”

I drew in a deep breath. “All right, you’ve got five minutes.”

He leaned forward. “So, get this: I took her to that lovely steakhouse on the outskirts of town that sits on the hill overlooking the city? And she was really into it. We ordered wine, we shared dessert, and she even let me feed her from her plate. The way her pink lips curled around that fork made my mind race all fucking night. And I’m telling you, dude, she’s just as much of a good lay as she is a good conversationalist.”

I nodded as he continued on with his story.

“She’s so willing to try new things,” he said as he spread his legs wide in the chair. “She let me pull her hair and fold her in half. She’s one of those women that once she comes the first time, she just keeps on going. I can’t even count how many times those eyes of hers rolled into the back of her head. It’s like dinner seduced her. I didn’t even have to peel her clothes off. She did that herself!”

I continued to nod as I stayed silent, trying to control the memories of my own weekend.

Because the last thing I needed was to have to hide my full-on erection from my business partner.

“And she’s loud, Dominik. Holy fucking Christ, I finally found me a woman that isn’t scared to make a damn sound in bed. And she’s got an appetite, too. I love a woman that can eat, especially when she’s got a fast metabolism. Don’t get me wrong, thick women are beautiful, but they just aren’t my thing. Emily’s my thing, and I can’t wait for her legs to wrap back around my waist this weekend.”

I nodded slowly. “So, you’re going out with her again?”

He snickered. “Did you hear anything I just said? Of course, we’re going out again.”

“Nice.”

He stared at me. “So?”

I shrugged. “So, what?”

He rolled his eyes. “Idiot. How was your weekend?”

I ignored his question and, instead, rested my forearms against my desk. “Did you know that Thaddius and Clyde played on the same high school football team all four years of their high school career?”

He leapt out of his chair as his eyes widened. “You’re fucking joking?”

I crooked my finger toward him. “Come here. See for yourself.”

I rolled away from my computer after pulling everything up and he quickly clicked through the images. He dipped down, crouching in front of me as I watched the reflection of his eyes through the screen of my computer. He shook his head softly, scoffing and sighing and chuckling as he came across every single revelation that had occupied my entire morning.

And after he was done, he stood and perched on the edge of my desk. “How close are the families now?”

I shrugged. “I’m not sure. I’m assuming not very close, since Thaddius didn’t bring up anything about knowing the caterer from the event.”

“You mean, Emily.”

I drew in a deep breath. “Yeah, her.”

Jackson nodded softly. “Do we know if their prior understanding of one another had anything to do with the party?”

“What do you mean?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. I mean, I know the research team is doing their thing like always, but I can’t shake the feeling that this assault didn’t actually take place. Did you see how empty that boy’s file was? Not even a damn parking ticket.”

“Because he doesn’t have his license yet.”

He groaned. “I know that a lack of record isn’t grounds for absolving someone of sexual assault, but I just feel like it didn’t happen. For some reason, I have this feeling in my gut that Lila cried wolf that night. And if she did, and if the fathers of these families know each other--”

“You’re thinking there’s a vendetta involved.”

He shrugged as he gazed down at me. “Tell me you’re not thinking the same thing.”

But, I couldn’t. “One thing at a time. All we can do is work with the concrete facts at our disposal. I have the research team focusing on their supposed relationship from their younger years right now, and once they’re done with that, we can start drawing conclusions and working our way forward to the shit that went down at the banquet.”

“If the girls knew the Beauregard Family, though, wouldn’t they have brought it up at some point in time?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “If the two had a falling out, they might not even know about the connection. High school friends don’t always stay friends, and it could just be a friendship that dissolved because they took two different paths in life. I mean, look at Thaddius, for fuck’s sake. And their father does what? Works in a grimy garage? Obviously, they didn’t walk the same path.”

Truth be told, socially? It could be beneath Thaddius and his family to associate themselves with the Rochere’s. I knew that much about the elite community I belonged to. All this information brought about more questions than answers, and I knew I was in for a hell of a week trying to dig up what exactly happened between the two heads of these families.

And I couldn’t wait to see what came about from all of this.
