A single tear trickled down my cheek, then another. I let it go without wiping it.

“But I’ve decided I no longer want to live there. I’m going to quit my job and move here so I can be with you.”

“W-what?” I said, turning to him. I wasn’t quite sure I heard him right.

“I’m moving to the island,” Miles said, brushing my tears away. “I can’t stand the thought of us being separate. I’ve already talked to my realtor. He’s going to put my condo on the market and get me a decent property here. A simple one, not too big, but one with an ocean view.”

I stared at him, unable to believe this was actually happening.

“And I know this might sound like I’m moving too fast, but I would really like for you to occupy that new home with me.”

He pulled out something glittery from his trunks and held it in front of me. “I got this after dropping off my ex at the airport, because I realized I never, ever want to lose you.”

“W-what?” My mind seemed stuck, unable to process what was happening. I stared at the ring he was holding, dumbfounded.

“Taylor Cooke,” Miles said, his voice trembling. “Would you marry me?”

I looked at him, then at the ring, and back at him. Somehow I managed to find my voice.

“Yes,” I whispered, the tears returning, but these were tears of a different kind. “Oh my god, Miles, yes!”

He placed the ring on my finger and we kissed. The sun disappeared over the horizon, a cool breeze whipped up around us just as it did when I first met him, and we continued kissing well into the night.
