“Sorry. Tay, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

He hesitated, then shook his head. “Never mind, it’s stupid.”

Now, Tay-Tay! Now’s your chance!

“Tell me,” I said, resting my palm on top of his hand briefly, feeling the same electric current course from him to me, spreading a warmness throughout my body.

Miles’ eyes went wide for a moment, and I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that he felt a similar sensation.

“It’s just that, for some strange reason, I feel like we’ve met before. Have we?”

My heart raced. He senses something!

“I don’t see how that’s possible,” I said cautiously. “I’ve never been outside of Kauai, and this is your first time here, right?”

“Yeah, you’re right,” Miles said, waving his hand. “Like I said, it’s stupid.”

“I don’t think so. Believe it or not, I got the same, uh, vibe, when I saw you.”

“You do?”

I nodded, finishing the food on my plate and washing it down with a can of lilikoi passion fruit drink. I wanted to tell Miles about lola Nora and her predictions, but I didn’t know how to explain it without sounding like some loony.

“Strange, huh?” I said instead.

“Yeah, strange.”

Our eyes locked for what must have been only a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity. Time stopped, the world around us faded away, and all that remained, all that mattered, was the two of us. I swam in his gaze, and a connection was made, somehow, on some deep, inexplicable level, between the two of us. I felt myself drawn into that connection, that irresistible, powerful, psychic pull, that invisible cord drawing us closer, like two pieces of the same whole coming together.

It wasn’t until our lips touched that we realized what was happening, and that snapped us back into reality, the shock of that moment reeling around us.

I blushed wildly, and I could see him going red too. He blinked, his expression confused, and I was certain he was going to apologize again and retreat back into his shell.

But then he gave me the most amazing smile I’d ever seen, and my heart soared.
