The sound of my name on his tongue is so intimate. Threatens to turn me to mush. “Yeah?”

“You’re a great mom.”

The inside of my mouth feels hot. I’m not sure why such a beautiful compliment turns me on. “I try.”

Rex chuckles. “And too damn humble.” He sticks his keys in the ignition and turns on the car. “Maybe I do still know you. At least a little.”

I don’t reply, my mouth hanging open.

He clicks on the radio and audibly groans. “Will they stop with this song?”

One of his. “All Hail (She)”. An anthem for women everywhere who want a man who gives good head.

Rex gives me a final smile and then drives off down the street, leaving me awestruck.

What the hell was that?

Chapter 9

Rex

“Do I really have to be business casual?” I ask, staring at the sports coat in Isabella’s hand.

We’re at the Ocotillo Valley Mall. Yep, a real, honest-to-goodness mall. Didn’t know these things still existed quite like this one. There’s a food court, a Spencer’s and a whole jungle gym for kids to trade germs back and forth.

Just like the good old days.

Of course, we’re not doing anything fun at the mall, just sorting through suit jackets that I know are all going to be just a little too short on my torso and show too much of my wrist.

“Yes.”

“You know, we’re not going to fool anyone with the whole ‘business dad’ thing…” I say, clocking some teen girls hiding with their phones out across the store from us. I’ve tried my best to blend in with a baseball cap and a simple black tee, but apparently, I didn't do enough to hide my rockstar vibe.

“I’m not trying to fool anyone,” Isabella says. “You’re his dad. And you take his education seriously. I don’t go to meetings in scrubs. I dress up.”

“That’s… fair,” I concede. “Hate that color though. Beige doesn’t do it for me.”

Isabella smiles smugly.

“You love it when you win an argument,” I say.

She puts the jacket back on the rack and sorts through the colors. “Who doesn’t?” She fishes out a navy blue. “Better?”

I sigh. “I guess.”

“Look, you’re not in your twenties anymore. You have to take things seriously.”

I hold up my hands. “Who said I wasn’t taking it seriously?”

“Your whole attitude!”

I lean against the rack. “Fine, just pick out things in my relative size and I’ll wear it.”

“Rex!” Isabella cries out in frustration, her brow furrowing.

I can’t hide my smile. She’s too cute when she’s annoyed with me. I know she’d hate to know that.

“Okay, you know what, you go sit on the husband’s couch,” she says.
