Damn Aidan for being perceptive asfuck.

"It's probably nothing," I argued, not entirely convinced myself. "One way or another, if he comes back, I'll be ready for him."

Aidan perked up on his chair, his shirt stretched to fit over laboriously earned muscles. Another occupational hazard for the job we did. "Him who?"

Sighing, I turned to the only man I'd ever trusted. "A demon."

His face gave his thoughts away. In an instant, the teal-eyed demon hunter's entire body coiled like a snake. After knowing him as long as I had, it was evident what I said put him on edge. "A demon?"

I caressed the handle of my favorite bat, keeping my eyes down. "I didn't sense him, but he didn't attack either. He told me to escape before the cops got there."

Aidan didn't look convinced. Not that I blamed him. I wasn't even convinced, sure the demon had an angle I wasn't aware of yet.

My friend's eyes stayed on me until I finally relented and glanced up. "You go with at least myself and one other from today forward," he ordered sternly.

"Aidan—"

"Or not at all," he cut in sharply. "If you didn't sense him, we're dealing with someone powerful. We'll need to do proper recon before I feel comfortable with you out there alone."

"I'm fine," I complained before his hands were on me, severe gaze locking mine into place.

Aidan's jaw worked before he spoke. "I don't know how many times I need to say this before you get it, but you're important to me. To us. You're going to have to knock me out if you want to go out there alone."

My lips tilted impishly. "Don't threaten me with a good time, Aidan."

"Cheeky shit."

I cackled, unable to hold it together when Aidan let his guard down and called me names. Around everyone else, he barely cursed. It felt like our special secret when his mouth got the better of him.

Someone entered the room, and Aidan was quick to put space between us. The familiar face of the person who despised me most out of the entire group met my next glance.

Ty carded through his hair, clearly agitated but saving the lecture he gave me whenever I did something he didn't approve of because we both knew I wouldn’t listen anyway. "We located the demon who killed two people at Blue yesterday."

Aidan tossed me a secret smile, then rose from his seat. "Show me what you've got."

“WHAT’S THE POINT OF LECTURING her if you're going to let this reckless chick come out the very next day, anyway?" Ty complained, decked out in his usual completely obvious and overdone fighting attire.

His dark “I’m a total bro” hair and baby-blue “fuck me, then fuck you” eyes always made a little part of me want to punch him. And he’d deserve it. The dude was a total Karen when it came to procedure and always the first to complain to Aidan when I didn’t follow it.

Worse, the asshole walked around looking like he was part of a special ops team everywhere we went. Overly serious, too by the book, with a deep-rooted hatred for anyone who didn't fall in line, that was Ty. He annoyed the shit out of me, but I respected the dude. Enough not to beat him senseless for all the shit he talked.

Obviously, the feeling wasn't mutual.

Aidan's amused grin beamed on his face from beside me, immediately causing his complaining counterpart to sigh. "I remember a few times when I did the same for you, Ty. You're not a saint."

"Two times," Ty corrected with a groan. "Two. Times. What count are we at withher? Five million?"

Five million? Classic.

That little excessively overexaggerated number did get a snicker out of me, and I tossed Aidan a sarcastic smirk before panning our surroundings.

It must be said, I took immense joy out of giving Ty hell.

Ty's sneaky glance my direction didn't go unnoticed, but I had a demon to hunt. Getting a rise out of Ty would have to wait until after I sunk my bat into a demon's skull.

I scanned the dark expanse of back lots on our way to the demon we'd tracked down the day before. When I stole a look down one of the many alleys along our way, a figure appeared in the middle, wearing a suit, eyes the color of emeralds, beauty otherworldly. His pearly white smile was clear as day even in nothing but shadow, and it hit me in a way that wasn't normal.

It appealed to me.
