Kina: Absolutely.

Jake, who is part of the text thread, sends a thumbs up emoji.

“Where were we?” My attention shifts back to Lysander. “Why did you disappear after you fired Eliot Briggs?”

“Taking time off work for private reasons is not a crime.”

“It is. In your case it most definitely is,” I say. “We’ve already gathered all the information we need to indict you for corruption, Lysander. That real estate company you pushed through for a state contract? We traced money to an offshore account that leads directly to you. And don’t forget your father’s tax evasion through his dental practice. One call and I can have the IRS banging on his doors.”

“Fuck off, asshole.”

“Answer him,” Louis says. To emphasize the point, he stands behind the seated Lysander, using his bulk to cover the camera angle. Louis presses a gun to the base of the jerk’s skull.

Lysander jumps in his seat when the barrel makes contact. He’s finally motivated to talk.

“My job was to stay close to Ana,” he admits shakily. “Since she made clear I’m not good enough to be her boyfriend, I had to track her some other way.”

Her being too good for him is so obvious, I can’t imagine why she dated him at all. That’s not what’s important at the moment, though.

“What do you mean your job?”

He shrugs, as if it isn’t his problem to explain shit to me. He’s wrong. There are so many ways that pissing me off is his problem.

“Anastasia Petrov has powerful enemies,” he states cryptically.

“You better start giving me some names,” I growl, standing up and opening my jacket to reveal my own holster.

Wolfson looks up at me with a sneer. “All I had to do was get close to her. And I did. No harm, no foul. We dated when she first moved to Norfolk. That’s it. Just needed to be close and report to a guy.”

“What guy? How did you report?”

“I had to buy a burner every time I called a number.”

Louis pushes the barrel into Lysander’s spine, making the jerk wince.

“I can give you the number, OK? It was always a different person on the end of the line. When I didn’t have access to Ana, I still kept tabs on her through Briggs. There was never any harm to her.”

“You’re wrong. She’s being threatened.”

“For fuck’s sake,” he yells. “I would never hurt Ana! If things worked out better, I would have loved to—”

I bang my fist on the table. Enough with this bullshit.

“Names, motherfucker, or I’ll pull the goddamn trigger myself.”

“Turner Real Estate,” he states through gritted teeth. That’s the company he endorsed for a government contract.

“What would a real estate company have to do with Ana? Industry secrets, or what? Are they a front for a competitor?”

“I swear to god I don’t know,” he exclaims.

I sit back down and put my phone on the table. “Call the number now.”

“They won’t answer if I don’t use a burner.”

I’m already activating an app on my phone. The software erases personal data and creates a disposable number to show on the other end.

“Do it,” I order, pushing my phone across the table.
