“Uhh, a lot of people assume. I’m sure she’s picked up on it.” A nervous laugh punctuates my reasoning.

The woman’s face relaxes. “I’m sure.” She addresses Isabel, “What’s your name, sweet girl?”

Before I have a chance to dodge the question, the little one answers. “Is-bewl.”

“What a pretty name! My name is Bree.”

Okay, this is taking up too much time. We have a fun-filled day planned and parks to play at.

“Nice to meet you, Bree.” I start to push forward, but the woman grabs the cart. A bit too forcefully for my liking.

“Wait, here’s my number.” She totally doesn’t read the severe set of my chin or clenching jaw when she thrusts a ripped receipt my way. “In case you want to meet up by the cheese again.” She giggles. It’s grating and nothing like the swan song that is Queeny’s laugh.

“I’m sorry, but we really need to be on our way. I might be in the store, but I’m not on the market.” I give her a robotic smile.

Isabel and I head toward the check-out line. I’m careful to look around to make sure we’re not being followed. By the time we’re done with lunch and making our playground rounds, it’s time to go home. Isabel is fast asleep before we even make it up the driveway.

Chapter 19

Mae's Monday

Mae

I’m not really sure how I got to work this morning. Possibly floating on a cloud of coitus high, reliving last night’s—and this morning’s—events in my head.

Remi was incredible. So much more than I could have ever imagined. My body tingles at the memory of his touch.

His submission.

His responsiveness.

He met me thrust for thrust. Challenge for challenge. It was carnal. Feral. Fucking transcendent.

My body is a feather floating in the breeze as Jay, Elliot, and I take the elevator up to Pür Headquarters. The image of Remi’s sleepy surprise at his morning wake-up now lives rent-free in my head. I hide a giggle behind my hand.

Jay’s narrowed eyes study me. Oh shit.

“You seem … happy?” they start.

I bite my cheek and hide the grin that wants to split my face. “Happy” is such a simple word for the way I feel. I had the best sex of my life last night, and we’re about to secure our company with the Pür Innovations account. This is going to be huge for us.

I’m more than happy. I’m fucking rhapsodic.

Being friends for over twenty years, Jay can read the expression on my face quite easily. I can practically see when the lightbulb goes off in my best friend’s head. “Oh. My. Goddess in a falafel. You— Oof.”

I elbow them in the stomach and nod toward my assistant. “We can talk about this later, Jayden,” I say through a tight smile.

Elliot shifts on his feet, nervous. I’m not sure if it’s because of my and Jay’s exchange or because this is the first time I’ve required him to come to a meeting outside of the office. But this is important, and my assistant is clever, smart, and charming. He’s the perfect person for this job.

I can’t help the pep in my step as we walk through the sliding doors into the front reception area of Pür.

“Good morning, Ms. Keller and Mx. Morales, so nice to see you again,” Felicia, Amala Williams’s assistant, greets us. “And this is…” She eyes the man beside me.

“Elliot Hansley, the backbone of Ever Heart,” I announce proudly, not missing the way she’s subtly checking him out.

Elliot’s eyes are so wide I’m afraid they’ll pop out. “Thank you, Mae.”

I wave him off.
