“Be safe and come home to me.” I didn’t mean to say it, but I don’t want to take it back.

Smokey-lined lids blink dreamily and slowly as her lips part, releasing a quivering breath. “I will.”

I’d fight wars to have her wear that dress for me one day.

“You have no idea what you do to me.” My voice is low and husky.

A hint of heat flashes in her big green eyes before they cool. “You’re right—I don’t. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have to try so many times to incapacitate you. I’m learning, though. Next time, I’ll make sure to get you good.” She smirks.

“I hope you do.”

Queeny tilts her pretty head. “You sure about that?”

“Yep,” I say, popping the P. “So you can nurse me back to health. You still owe me a nip slip.”

Her laugh is the most contagious sound in the world, and I love hearing it.

She swats my chest before pushing me away. “Alright, Prince Charming, I’m going to be late if I don’t leave soon.”

I let her go because as much as I want to keep her all to myself, she needs this—a night she can be carefree Mae and not Mom.

As soon as her cab arrives, I walk with her outside and open the passenger door. “Have fun.”

Her eyes linger on me a bit, tempting me to kiss her so thoroughly that she’d rub her supple lips together all night, savoring the ache.

“I will, thanks to you.” She pulls the door closed, leaving me standing there and watching until the yellow cab turns the corner.

I miss her already.

Chapter 14

Adore You by Harry Styles

Remi

Isabel woke up early from her nap, which meant she fell asleep early for the night. I’ve never interacted with a toddler as easygoing as Isabel. She listens, and even though there are times she pushes her boundaries, she has a sweet way of doing it. I’m not saying she doesn’t throw tantrums because she does. Every child does. But Isabel is quick to forgive and amend. She’s also hilarious, which makes my job ridiculously easy and fun.

Whoever Isabel’s father is, he’s a fucking idiot for disappearing. Kiara told me he was a deadbeat dad, but Mae never talks about him. Selfishly, I’m glad. The piece of shit doesn’t deserve them. Call me an asshole, but I’m glad he’s scarce because if he was around, I would have never met my girls.

When my phone chimes with a text, I smile.

Queeny: Having so much fun. Thank you. You are just the best.

She has no clue what her words do to me. It’s the equivalent of rocket fuel blowing me out of the stratosphere. No one has ever affected me this much.

I start typing back.

Me: I’m glad. You deserve it.

My fingers pause, before I say fuck it and add something I probably shouldn’t.

Me: Beautiful girl.

I watch as three little dots blink in and out, telling me she’s writing something. I’m hoping she’s a little flirty. The wait is painful, and I almost send another text but stop myself. The ball is in her court. It’s her turn to pass it back.

I try not to be too disappointed when the dots disappear with no more words from Queeny.

Sighing, I set my phone aside and shuffle through Netflix, trying to find a good movie that will help me forget about all the scenarios that are now running through my head.
