“Remi?” Did he butt-dial me?

I pull my phone back and look at the screen. The number comes up “Restricted” and now I’m creeped out. If it was Remi, it would say “Manny”. Holding my cell in front of my mouth, I stare at the screen as if it’s playing a horror movie.

“Who is this?” I demand.

All I get is a dial-tone in response, leaving me baffled.

Maybe it was just a robocall. Great, those bots are like vultures. Once they know a live person will answer a number, they’ll sell it to the highest bidder. I’m now on a call list. Wonderful.

Shaking my head, I get back to work.

The rest of the morning, I crunch numbers until the pain behind my eyes turns into head-splitting agony. But I can’t stop now. I’m sure the solution is right past this hurdle. There’s got to be a way to keep this company profitable. We just need a little something for us to gain momentum. But the longer I sit here researching, the more I end up with nothing but my skull splitting apart.

My cell phone chimes again, startling me.

Corissa: We’re going out for drinks Saturday night. You in?

Rubbing the tired out of my eyes, I think about my response. It’s not that I don’t want to go. I just don’t want to abandon my responsibility to have fun. It feels wrong … like Brad.

Me: I don’t have a sitter. Another time maybe?

Corissa: What about that hot nanny?

Smirking, I shake my head. He’s certainly popular with the ladies.

Me: He’s been working overtime. It’s his night off.

I am not going to take up any more of his free time.

My phone goes off again, but I silence it. I need to stay on top of my game, and blowing off steam with girlfriends isn’t going to help that.

I’ve found it. The golden ticket. The solution to all our problems. I was right to keep looking for it. I’m tenacious for a reason.

I blink through my double vision before I hit the phone number. “Hi, I’m Miranda Keller from Ever Heart Digital. I’d like to make an appointment with Mrs. Williams.” Cold-calling isn’t usually my style, but it’s a chance I have to take.

“Hold, please.”

My heart is hammering through my chest. This appointment will mean business if I can speak to Amala Williams woman to woman. She happens to be an executive director at Pür Innovations, the parent company of toy and baby stores across the nation. While they are not as big as Dexico, it’s something substantial.

“Miranda?” Her receptionist gets back on the line. “How is this Friday at 4pm?”

“Perfect.” Even if it was the eighth day of the week, I’d make it work.

“Great. Amala looks forward to meeting with you.”

My stomach settles with that sentence. My shoulders drop, and the tension that holds my head in a vise grip loosens to a dull ache. I calmly lay my phone on my desk, then jump up and cheer, “Yes!”

My palm flies to my temple as my head gives a grumbled throb at my sudden movement, but it doesn’t suppress my burst of excitement. We might just make it after all.

With hope igniting my energy, I run over to Jay’s office. They’re sitting at their art station, looking uninspired.

I’m about to make their day. “Hey, look alive. We have work to do.”

Jumping to their feet, they press a hand to their chest. “You can’t just barge in here like the Kool-Aid man. You almost gave me a heart attack.”

“Sit.”

“So bossy.”
