“What’s with the costumes?”

“My brother is big into cosplay.” Corissa rolls her eyes. “He’s twenty-eight going on twelve.”

Just then, my ears tune to my daughter’s shrieks. Turning around, I see her little chubby arm pointing at—

Oh no.

“Fuck! No! Fuck!” Isabel is pointing to a person dressed as the Hulk—a very realistic one with a huge mask and hands.

Remi is in front of her, trying to calm her down.

“Is that your daughter yelling ‘fuck’?” Kelly asks.

“She is scared of the Hulk, but she can’t pronounce her Ls, so it sounds like—”

“Fuck!” she screams, pointing behind Remi as if he’s in imminent danger.

“That,” I finish my sentence.

The girls double over.

Kelly slaps her thighs. “That is the best thing I’ve ever heard.”

We watch on as Remi gets the Hulk to take off his mask and show Isabel that it’s just a costume. She doesn’t look convinced, so she tucks her head and hides her eyes.

Picking her up, Remi comes over to where we are. “It’s okay, sweetie. He’s nice. The Hulk helps people.”

I pull her into my arms, brushing her tears away.

She peers at me with a puffed bottom lip and watery eyes. “No fuck, Mommy.”

“Unfortunately, babe, ‘no fuck’ is right.” I don’t know where that came from or why I even said it.

Remi jerks. His eyebrows shoot toward his hairline as a grin spreads across his face. Two flirty dimples dig into his cheeks.

Everyone peels with giggles. Isabel sees everyone laughing, so not to miss out, she joins in. Welp, at least her tears have dried.

After she catches her breath, Corissa pats me on the shoulder. “I think we need to hang out more often.”

“Oh, well, between work and Isabel, I don’t really have time to do much hanging out.”

Remi butts in. “What she means is that she’d love to.” He softly pinches the back of my neck, and goosebumps coat my skin. “I can stay with Isabel if you want to have a girls’ night.”

I haven’t had one of those since college, when I actually had girlfriends. Once Jay and I started building Ever Heart, I drifted away from most of my friends and fun. They got married and had children, and I had work, then Isabel.

“You’re such a great guy, Remi. I wish all nannies were like you,” Kelly simpers, not even hiding her obvious attraction.

“Well, unfortunately, I’m a rare breed. And this little one owns me.” He splays his hand on Isabel’s back while I’m holding her.

They all swoon … again.

“So, that was pretty funny, wasn’t it?” Now that we’re alone, I want to know if he was affected by the way Corissa, Kelly, and Pandee were openly flirting with him.

Did he like it? Did he want to flirt back? Did he catch feelings? The bigger question is … why do I care so much?

After a burger and a couple of beers, the girls and I exchanged numbers. They made me promise that I’ll go out with them one night. After much encouragement from Remi—otherwise known as blackmail—I agreed.

“What was funny? Isabel shouting ‘fuck’ or the way those women were eye-fucking me?”
