“No, you’re ignoring the mammoth in the room.”

I choke, and coffee sprays on my pristine white countertop.

The jerk chuckles. “We can’t avoid talking about it forever.”

Watch me. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

He squints, scratching the playful set of his chin. “Okay, have it your way. I’ll let you stew on it. You’ll come around … eventually.”

“While you were away, two things happened.” I hand Jay their coffee before sitting across from them for our Monday morning meeting.

Jay takes an exaggerated sip and moans. “Exquisite,” they sigh, then wave their hand. “Go on.”

“Right, well, we’re probably going to lose the Dexico account.”

Jay stops making love to their coffee and focuses on me, concern etching their face. “I know you worked really hard on this, and we did everything we could.” They shrug. “Besides, I’ve always felt they’re not a good fit. That Paul asshole creeps me out,” they finish with a dramatic shiver.

“I just wanted us to be on top. Landing big accounts, like Dexico, attracts other big accounts.”

“I told you—we don’t need Dexico.” They take another swig. “We are solid with the accounts we already have. There will always be other Dexicos, Mae. With you at the helm, I have no doubt.”

My soul dies a little at their confidence in me. Jay is an artistic person—they don’t mess with numbers. That falls on me, and it’s not looking pretty. I’m not so sure we’ll be able to recover if more investors follow Pingman’s lead. Sometimes, I wish Jay would take a more invested look into our financial health. If they understood the predicament we were in, they’d understand my concerns.

Setting their coffee down, Jay adjusts their sleeves. “What happened with that meeting, anyway?”

I knew they’d ask, and I know just the thing I can distract them with. “We can discuss it with our team later.” Skimming over the issue, I pretend I didn’t fantasize about castrating Dexico’s CEO. “Don’t you want to know the second thing that happened?”

They raise an eyebrow like they’re going to call me out for holding back information, but they let it go. “Tell me.”

Settling back into my seat, I cradle my coffee in both hands, pausing for anticipation. A sly smirk spreads across my face. “I saw hot manny’s monster dick this morning.”

They choke on their latte, getting it all over their blue silk kimono. “Jesus fucking Christ, Mae. Give a warning before you paint that picture.”

I start laughing. “What picture?”

“Uh, an image of the Inglesias doppelganger with a delectable dick.”

My cheeks flare, and I press the back of my hand to them, feeling their warmth. I do not blush. Ever. “It was awful.”

“Lies,” Jay hisses.

I throw my balled up napkin at them. “I’m being serious.”

“Okay, tell me everything. Let your bestie assess the damage.”

“He was on a date,” I pout.

“Wait, he showed you his jewels while he was romancing another woman?” Jay leans back as their brows creep to their hairline. “Feral.”

I click my tongue. “No, you big dummy. Isabel’s getting her molars in so she was fussy and screaming for Remi. I had no choice. I called him.”

“And he was on a date?”

“Yeah, only I didn’t know it until he brought her to the house.” I peer deep into the caramel contents of my cup, trying to see a future without ever looking at Remi again. It’s bleak.

“And then he showed you his cock?”

“No, let go of the cock thing for now. Would ya?”
