We all laugh. It’s joyous and exciting, and humbling.

In a few hours, we’re in Mae’s assigned room, waiting for Charlotte to come with Isabel. I can’t stop holding Lukas and making silly faces at him. He can’t see much, but it doesn’t stop my overzealous dad streak.

When the door finally opens, my Isa-bea runs inside but halts when she spots the tiny bundle in my arms. I start crying like a chick all over again.

Our daughter fidgets and hesitates until I sit, waving her over. She gives me an excited smile and runs to me, wanting to meet her baby brother. She’s been planning for her little sibling to come home. Drawing pictures and making a list of dos and don’ts, she is taking her big sister duty very seriously.

I let Charlotte hold the baby while Isabel sits on my lap. She wants to know all about “Mommy pushing the baby out of her belly”. I try to describe it as delicately and kid-friendly as I can. Mae giggles at my fumbling story.

“He looks just like you, Remi,” Charlotte says, swaying the bundle in her arms.

This surprises me. “You think? He’s got Mae’s button nose,” I point out.

“Yeah, but the rest is all you.” Mae smirks. “I’ll be warding the girls off with black magic.”

Charlotte chuckles before giving Lukas to Queeny. “I’m going to step out and call Randy.”

When she leaves, Isabel climbs on Mae’s bed to get a better look at her brother.

“Do you want to hold him?” I ask, knowing that she’ll bond with him right away if she does.

She gives me a look of wonder. “Can I?”

“Sure, baby. Come sit against Mommy,” Mae says, handing Lukas to me as she gets Isabel into position.

I lay the baby on Isabel’s lap, and the three of us cradle him together.

I realize money and power don’t make a man, like my father thinks. I didn’t need to become a medical doctor to find success in life. This right here makes me the richest man on Earth, and the happiest too.

That’s pretty damn exceptional.

The End
