I stare up at the stars, filtering my mind of needless thoughts. But each time I come back to Mason.

I can’t be with him, but if I could just hear his voice, I’ll know where he’s at. If it truly is over.

I call him.

I pray he answers, and when he does, I’m more surprised than relieved.

“Hey,” he murmurs.

“Hey. I heard about Pope. I’m sorry, Mase.”

“Thanks.”

It goes quiet, too quiet. It becomes awkward and abundantly clear I’ll be the one to keep the conversation going.

“How are you holding up?”

“Oh, you know, I knocked my old lady up, and she left, told me goodbye. My dad was shot dead because I made the wrong call, and the guy I’ve looked up to my whole life is dead. And when I needed my old lady the most, she’s nowhere to be fuckin’ seen.”

Hot tears spill from my eyes, and I struggle to catch my breath.

“Mase, you made it clear where I stood. I wasn’t going to stick around and let you hurt me over and over. It’s hard to be around you when you don’t want our baby…”

“That baby is the least of my concerns right now. I’ve got my father and Grumps to bury…”

He can be so cold sometimes. Tonight, it angers me that he’s making out I just walked away without care or consideration.

“That baby? Not that you’ll care to know, but I’m pregnant with twins, and they’re both healthy. You go do what you need to do, and so will I. If you ever think about us in the future, wondering where we are or how we are, just remember that it will be me who raises them to be amazing people. You don’t even deserve to be their dad… your dad would be ashamed of you.”

“Hey, babe?”

“What?”

“Fuck you.”

The call ends, and I go to throw my phone but stop at the last moment.

That man infuriates me to no end. I don’t know what to do about him anymore, and maybe it’s time I stop trying to figure him out. When Mason doesn’t want you to know something, you never will.

Chapter Fifteen

Myles

Tommy is asleep in his crib at the end of the bed, and Penelope is staying with Rayna over at Holly and Leo’s for a couple of days.

“I spoke to Aspen earlier,” Emma says quietly as not to wake our son. “She said she’s not coming back.”

“Unless Mase makes it right with her, I don’t exactly blame her. Some shit went down in Harlow, and I’m not sure if he’ll ever be the guy she knew.”

“What happened?”

I knew this was coming.

“I’ve always promised I’d never keep anything from you, but this, this I can’t tell you. It’s Mason’s place, and trust me, he’ll never tell you.”

“Hey, if it’s Mason’s business, then it’s not your place to share. I get it. Just remember that the moments he’s not leaning on you, you can lean on me. I’m here for you.”

As we sat side by side, our backs against the headboard, I take hold of her hand and bring it to my mouth, gently pressing a soft kiss on her knuckles.
