“It could be worse.”

“Could it? Really?”

Aspen walks in and takes the chair Leo was just sitting in.

“How did you get the nurses to room us together?” Myles asks her.

“I donated a nice check to the ward and told them their sanity wouldn’t be tested as much if they complied.” She looks at me and asks, “How are you feeling?”

“Not so bad, the drugs are good.”

“Mase, I know this isn’t a good time, but we need to sort out a few things.”

“We’ll talk once I’m discharged…”

“I can’t continue on like this. We need to talk before we leave town.”

“We will.”

It’ll give me a couple of days to sort my head out.

Zach’s the first one to visit our asses today. The nurses have me and Myles up and out of bed, walking up and down the corridor to build our strength.

“Love the gowns, brothers,” he quips.

“Yeah, that’s what your mom told us,” Myles retorts.

“You’re lucky you nearly died…” We both catch the moment he realises what he said. “Sorry, poor taste of words.”

“It’s fine. We know you didn’t mean any harm,” I tell him, asking him, “Is there a reason you’re here, or do you miss our company?”

“I’m just letting you know I’ve made arrangements for your dad to be taken home. We need you discharged by the end of the day.”

The nurses keep telling us how well we’re doing. “That shouldn’t be a problem.”

I look over his shoulder, expecting Aspen to follow him any moment.

“Aspen not with you?”

“No, she stayed at the bar. She said she’d come by later.”

A pang of sadness resonates through me, and I don’t fully believe she will. I think I’ve pushed her too far. I don’t know what I’m doing. When she’s around, I just push her away.

I still don’t know what to tell her when she asks her questions.

“Hey, sweetheart!” Myles calls out to a passing nurse. She stops and purses her lips. “As you can see, we’ve risen from the dead and are now the picture of health. See what you can do about getting us discharge papers to sign. We’ve got shit to do.”

“But you…”

“I want out of here, get those papers before we just walk out of here.”

“I’ll get the doctor.”

“Thanks. And if you could put a rush on it, that’ll be just dandy.”

Zach snorts and rolls his eyes.

“Done. Make sure someone’s here to pick us up. Won’t exactly look good if we make a scene and then end up camping outside the main entrance.”
