“I just want to know one thing. Can you at least answer me one question?”

She takes my silence as agreement and goes on to ask, “What was your first thought when I told you I was pregnant?”

“You don’t want to know.”

“Yes, I do.” She moves closer to me, poking her finger into my chest. “Tell me, Mase. You owe me that, at least.”

She can’t say I didn’t warn her. I push her against the wall like I have done so many times before, only this time, we’re not tearing at each other’s clothes.

“I was beyond disappointed. I wanted you to tell me you were fucking around and was only joking. The only thing I need to complete me is you.”

“But this baby, it’s a part of us both.”

“Look around, babe. Myles was taken. What if that was our child? What if it was me, leaving behind my kid without a father?”

“It wouldn’t happen…”

Slamming my hand against the wall, I yell, “It could, and you know it as well as I do.”

“So, what are you saying? Do you want me to get rid of our baby?”

I wish she would stop referring to it as our baby.

“Fuck!” I roar, pushing away from the wall. “I told you I can’t talk about this now.”

“Then let me make it easier on you because it’s always about you, isn’t it? I’m going home, and until you get your shit together, leave me the fuck alone.”

For the first time since I’ve known her, I let her walk away from me. The door closes behind her, and I slam my fist into the wall. Once I get my brother back, I’ll fix this shit with my old lady. I don’t know how, but I will.

By the time I make it back down to the bar, Aspen’s gone, and so is her bag from behind the bar.

“We leave at eleven,” Leo tells me.

I check my guns and make sure I have more than enough bullets to last a night-long fight if needs be. The tension in the bar is thick with simmering violence I’d enjoy on any other day.

Leo’s phone rings again, and he answers, quickly putting it on speaker. It’s JJ.

“Still no one around, Leo. If they have a plan of attack, they’re not getting here early to prepare.”

“Just keep watch.”

JJ ends the call, and I return to ensuring my blades are securely tucked into my boot, my holster, and one up my sleeve, where I fashioned a slip to tuck it into.

“Aspen didn’t look happy when she ran out of here earlier.”

I look up to find Dad taking a seat beside me. Usually, I’d talk to Myles to seek his advice, not that I normally take his advice; he’s not exactly known for his wisdom.

“She’s pregnant,” I murmur quietly.

I don’t need anyone else overhearing.

“And you’re not happy about it?”

I snort. “That’s an understatement.”

“You’ll have to explain, son. You love her, you’ve set up a home with her, it’s only natural that a baby is the next step.”

Shaking my head, I tell him, “I don’t want children. I see Myles with Tommy and Penelope, and he’s a good dad. He took to fatherhood like it was meant to be for him, but I don’t want that responsibility. I have the club, and I have Aspen. That’s all I need.”
