“Are you meeting someone else tonight for a proper goodbye?”

She grins. “Yes.”

“You know you’ve never even told me the guy’s name. Who have you been secretly running around with?”

“I know, I know…” She looks down and it annoys me.

“Tell me. I’m pregnant and can’t get drunk, so I deserve gossip.”

“Fine. His name is Chris.”

“Does Chris have a last name?”

“Hoffman.”

“Sounds like a serious guy. What does he do?”

“He’s a cop.”

“No way.”

“Yep. He works at BCPD.”

I still for a moment. “Did he work with Rowan?”

She nods.

“Huh. Ironic.”

“Yeah, I know. Anyway. We’re super different.”

“No kidding—a cop and a free-spirit.”

“Right? We’ve kind of been on and off, but whatever, I’m leaving, so it’s done.”

“Maybe you two can see each other when you come back to visit me and the baby.”

“Maybe.” Emma takes a long sip of her margarita. “So… um…”

“What?”

“I have news.”

“What?”

“Rowan knows.”

“What?”

Emma nods, takes another deep sip in a way that suggests she’s relieved to have told me.

“How?” I ask.

“Chris told me.”

“How did she find out?”

“You know my friend Andrew’s ex-wife?”
