“Sorry, I heard you come downstairs and wanted to apologise for earlier.”

“It’s fine, really, but you couldn’t wait until tomorrow?” I was over it, but yeah, I could have been more considerate.

“Yeah, sorry. I couldn’t sleep either. Cindy wants some time and space, so I wasn’t in the best frame of mind.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, and it’s fine.”

He shrugged, not seeming bothered. We’d both heard it before and knew that in a week or so, they’d be back together.

“So, you wanna tell me what happened earlier? You seemed mighty cosy, snuggled up with John. I take it the date went well despite him being late,” he said.

“He wasn’t that late, and I think it went well. We went to an Italian restaurant, and then he brought me home.”

“Looks like you had a good time. Are you seeing him again?”

It was my turn to shrug, but I had promised to call John tomorrow.

“More than likely. I said I’d call him. He’s…nice.”

“Ah, just nice? Is that a good or a bad thing?”

“You know, I think it’s a good thing. I don’t recall ever going with a good guy before, always with the bad ones. Stuart was the worst.”

“No argument from me. Can you settle for nice?” He had a point.

“I think it’s about time I tried something new.” I yawned—finally—and stood. “You coming up?”

“I’ll stay here a while longer.” We’d both be tired tomorrow.

As soon as my head hit the pillow, I fell into a deep sleep. All too soon, the alarm sounded, and it was time to get up.

Drew was in the kitchen, making coffee.

“We could not bother going in today. I don’t have any appointments.” He handed me a mug of steaming black coffee.

I checked my phone. “I have one at midday.”

“We’ll go in later, then. I’m off back to bed.”

Seemed he was still grumpy. I took my coffee to bed and snuggled back down, my phone in hand.

Should I call John? But I didn’t know how he’d react to a call this early. I pulled up his number, and my finger hovered over his number.

Pressing Dial, I waited. It rang once, twice, three times. No answer. Perhaps he was still sleeping. I was about to end the call when he answered.

“Liam, is that you?”

“Who else would it be, silly?”

“Is everything okay? Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. You said to call you, so I’m calling you.”

“It’s seven in the morning, Liam.”

“Oopsie. Did I wake Daddy up?” I asked cheekily.

“Yes, Liam woke Daddy up. I was having a very nice dream, though,” he said, his voice thick with sleep.
