Coulter just gave a slow nod and turned back to me.

My stomach clenched as a sickening wave washed through me.

“I guess there’s only one place for you to go, isn’t there?” he said carefully.

Thomas stumbled forward and cast the map he’d torn from the wall out and into the dark. The night breeze caught it, causing it to flap and slip away, disappearing from view.

“Fuck!” the guard behind me snapped and pushed forward.

“Leave it,” Coulter commanded. “I’m not missing this…not for all the world.” He glanced at the asshole who had me by the shirt. “Bring them and if they give you any trouble, put a bullet in the Priest.”

EIGHTEEN

Helene

My head rolled forward and my teeth gnashed, shocking me out of the washed-out gray blur of my mind.

“There she is.” Warped words reached me.

A woman?

Her fingers were cruel as they grabbed my arm and twisted. Pain followed, the ache familiar and cruel. I tried to open my eyes, but they refused to budge, leaving my head to roll.

A crack of light slipped in, but it was the heaviness that held me under.

The heavy gray fog in my mind.

Fragments came to me.

A room…

A hiss of something.

Then nothing.

“Do you like it?” The woman asked, moving in close. “We took what they’d been giving out at The Order and had our chemist tweak it a little. I was told it gives a helluva rush.”

Her face was blurred and her wide eyes were fixed on mine. “Looks like it does, doesn’t it?”

I had no idea what she was even saying.

My tongue felt thick and alien as I licked arid lips and croaked, “Where am I?” I winced with the words, my throat sore and aching.

I tried to remember what had happened…but there was nothing, not even my own name came back to me. Just nothing but emptiness.

“Oh, honey, don’t you remember? You’re at your wedding,” she said as she straightened.

Wedding?

My…wedding. I tried to hold my head up, keeping her stare as she straightened. “Here. Let me help you get dressed, we can’t very well have you walking on stage dressed like that now, can we?”

I slowly looked down at the red lingerie I wore and scowled. “No,” I slurred. “I guess not.”

The woman turned around and walked to a chair, grabbing something black before she turned around and came back. I winced at the glaring fluorescent lights that hurt my eyes.

“Here we go.” She slipped the shoulder strap down. “Let’s get you fixed up.”

She pulled the bodysuit down with a hard yank, spilling my breasts free. Cold air licked me, making my nipples tighten. She lowered her head, watching the reaction, then cruelly cupped my breast. “Fuck, you’re beautiful.”
