He opened his mouth to speak, until London lifted his hand, silencing him without saying a word as he headed after Carven and Colt, who carried Vivienne toward the hallway on the left.

The wounded sound that came from the bodyguard was fucking brutal. I winced as a man and a woman stepped out of a room at the end of the hallway.

“In here,” the male called, ushering the Sons forward into the room.

“Helene,” I lunged, grabbing her arm gently, stopping her. “Let them work.”

She shook her head, but she didn’t fight when London stepped into that room and closed the door behind him. Instead, she spun around with tears streaming down her beautiful, blood-splattered face. “Tell me they’re going to survive.” She searched my eyes. “Tell me, Riven.”

I’d sworn I’d never lie to her. Even though my version of the truth had been fucking weak at best. It’d only been for her own good. But this…this wasn’t going to be good for anyone. “I don’t know.” I answered carefully. “I wish to God I did.”

Her lower lip trembled, moving me to slide my hands up to her shoulders and pull her against me as my brothers filled the entrance of the hallway behind us. “But what I do know is that we will get through this together.”

She lifted her head. “Promise?”

When I stared into her eyes, how could I do anything else?

“I promise,” I answered, watching a look of relief wash through her stare.

A promise that made me feel cautious. What the hell was going on in that beautiful head of hers? I brushed her hair from her eyes, searching for a hint of what it was, until she looked away.

“Do we trust that doctor?” Kane asked.

That alone piqued my interest. That was a first coming from him. I glanced at the closed door at the end of the hallway. “I have no idea. But if London allows him to touch the woman he loves, then I’m guessing that’s our answer.”

Helene’s teeth chattered, causing me to press her harder against my bare chest.

The bodyguard moved, stepping close. “I’ll get some coffee on the way.”

“And a change of clothes,” Kane added. “For Helene.”

The guy just gave a nod and turned, walking, heading deeper in the house.

“Hunter.” I called my brother. “Keep Helene warm, will you?”

I didn’t wait for a response, knowing damn well the male would be only too happy to share his body heat with her. I went after the bodyguard, following him back to the hallway near the entrance, then to the kitchen. The moment I stepped through, he started.

“Whatever you have to say to me, just go ahead and say it.”

I scowled as I watched him pull cups from a cupboard overhead and fill the coffee machine.

“Whatever happened between you and St. James stays between you.” My tone was colder than I wanted. I winced, watching the male work. “We all fucked up tonight. But that changes nothing.”

He spun around, holding the coffee filter in his hand. “If she loses the babies, it changes everything.”

Tell me. Helene’s own desperation still lingered. Tell me they’re going to survive.

I strode forward and gently placed my hand on the stranger’s shoulder. “Then we’ll pray that doesn’t happen.”

He met my stare and I had to wonder who the fuck he looked at. Because I sure as hell wasn’t anyone I recognized, not anymore. One slow nod and I pulled away, leaving the bodyguard to turn around and operate the coffee machine.

“Guild,” He said finally. “That’s my name.”

“Riven,” I answered.

“I know who you are. You and your brothers.”

My breath caught as I waited for the other name to spill from his lips. Principal. But he never said that. Instead, he gathered cream and sugar on the counter in the middle of the room and poured coffee into the mugs, handing them to me one by one as though I knew how my kin took their brew.
