“Ki, I know you’ve been sad because Daddy’s gone, and I’m sorry. I know there were times after Daddy died that I may have scared you because all I did was cry and mope around. I know I didn’t look or act like myself, but I don’t think I would’ve ever made it if it weren’t for you. You’re like my little superhero.”

“Really?” she asked enthusiastically.

“Really. You give me strength that I never knew I had, and even though it’s the two of us—fuck, I don’t know what I’m trying to say,” I said, wiping my eyes.

“Oh, Mommy. You said a bad word,” Kiyah whispered.

“I did, baby, and I’m sorry. What I’m trying to say is that I love you and that I never feel alone when I’m with you.”

“I love you, too, Mommy. Can we go back home now?”

“Sure. Let’s go.”

* * *

I opened my eyes and squinted at the brightness.

Oh, my God. I overslept!

I eased Kiyah off my chest and searched for my cell phone. I found it on the kitchen counter with a note.

Kierra,

You and Kiyah had a long night. I took the boys to school and took Daisy with me to work.

Jonathan

“Shit!”

“Mommy…you said a bad word again,” Kiyah mumbled sleepily from the couch.

“I’m sorry, Ki. We need to get up and get ready for the day.”

“I want to sleep.”

“Are you sure? I have to go to Mr. Jonathan’s office.”

I smacked my lips when Kiyah rolled off the sofa onto her feet. “I love Mr. Jonathan’s office!”

“You love the snacks.”

“That too.”

“Go upstairs and brush your teeth and wash your face.”

I called Jonathan’s office as soon as Kiyah was out of sight.

“Good morning, this is Cara.”

“Hey, Ms. Cara. This is Kierra.”

“Good morning, Kierra. How are you?”

“I’m fine. Thank you. Is Jonathan available?”

“He’s currently on a conference call.”

“Right. I’m on my way to pick up Daisy.”
