“I know,” she whispered, “but it feels so wrong to be happy without him.”

“You sound like you have some of Survivor’s Guilt.”

“Lawyer and a therapist? You’re a man of many talents,” Kierra said upon entering the house.

“And you’re the Queen of Deflection,” I teased, locking the door behind us.

“I wear my crown proudly.”

“Of course. Let me walk you to your room.”

I was pleasantly surprised when the stubborn woman didn’t repel my offer. We arrived outside her bedroom, and I pressed my ear to her door and motioned for her to wait.

“What’s the matter? Is someone in there?” Kierra panicked.

“Wait right here.”

“Wh—”

“It’s okay. I’ll handle it.”

I entered her bedroom slowly and checked the closet.

“H-he might be in the bathroom,” she whispered. I nearly fell to my knees laughing when she entered the bedroom, her shaky fists drawn, primed, and ready to fight.

“Southpaw?”

“Jonathan! This is not the time to comment on my boxing stance!”

“Right,” I chuckled.

She’s so naïve that it’s endearing.

I checked the bathroom and finally under the bed before climbing to my feet.

“I’m happy to report you don’t have any monsters hiding under your bed.”

It took several seconds before it finally clicked. “Get out,” Kierra demanded, pointing towards the hallway.

“What did I do?”

“You play too much, Jonathan. I thought there was an intruder, but you were looking for make-believe monsters under the bed.”

“I’m being hospitable.”

“A hospitable idiot. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight. Don’t let the—actually, I should check for bedbugs.”

“It sounds like you’re making any excuse you can to get near my bed,” she remarked before shoving me out of her bedroom. I chuckled when the door closed promptly in my face. A throat cleared behind me. I whirled around to find Grant, Casey, Kiyah, and Daisy staring at me expectantly.

“Hey, guys. It’s bedtime.”

“We’re not tired,” Grant said, speaking for the entire horde of children.

“Case, you look a little sleepy.”

“Nope.”
