But it’s her first day, Jon, and she needs you.

I snapped Kieran back in his onesie before answering.

“Okay, Kiyah. I’ll take you guys to school, but we need to be out of the door by 7:00—not a minute later. Can you do that?”

She nodded enthusiastically. “I can do that.”

“Good. Please brush your teeth, wash and lotion your face, and make your bed before joining me downstairs for breakfast.”

“Will you make chocolate chip pancakes?”

“I will if we have chocolate chips.”

“We do. I saw them in the pantry yesterday.”

Of course, she did.

“Wonderful. I’ll be down there soon,” I confirmed, placing Kieran on my shoulder. When I returned to the bedroom, Kierra was already propped against the headboard, waiting to receive our son. “Good morning,” I said, kissing her lips before completing the exchange. I watched as he latched on and began to suckle greedily. “What do you plan on doing today?”

She sighed. “I think today will be the day I actually get up and start really moving around, you know? I’ll cook dinner. What do you want?”

“Don’t push yourself. You have help.”

“I know, but I’ll be fine. I’m not in pain any longer, and I’m moving around better. What cases are you working on today?”

I fell back on the bed and closed my eyes. “My potential client was riding a bike and was hit by an ambulance that blew through a stoplight.”

“Isn’t that normal for them to do?”

“Allegedly, the ambulance didn’t have their lights or siren on.”

“Sounds like easy money to me.”

I snorted. “We’ll see. It’s usually the “easy” ones that give me the most headaches.”

“Excuse me,” we heard from the bedroom entry.

“Good morning, Grant.”

“Good morning, Dad and Ms. Kierra.”

Kierra smiled weakly. “Good morning, Grant. Are you excited for school?”

“No.”

“Fair enough,” she laughed.

“Dad, Kiyah mentioned chocolate chip pancakes. We’re waiting on you.”

“Here I come,” I said, easing myself off the bed.

“I’ll lay your suit out and get Casey and Daisy up before meeting you downstairs.”

“Thank you. I love you, Kierra.”

“I love you, too, Jon.”
