“Girl code states I have to side with Simone.”

“Sheep,” he huffed, mainly from Nori jumping into his lap.

“Can I get you anything else, Mr. Baker?” Camilla, the stewardess, asked in a syrupy, sweet tone that would leave anyone with a cavity. I rolled my eyes when she attempted to give Jonathan a view of her cleavage. Anthony whistled, catching her attention.

“Hey, sweetheart, give it a rest. That man doesn’t want you.”

I snorted, and orange juice and champagne flooded my nasal cavity. Grant jumped out of his seat and handed me a napkin. “Thank you, baby,” I sputtered.

“Excuse me,” Camilla said before scurrying towards the galley.

“Did you have to embarrass her like that?” Jonathan asked, finally looking up from his phone.

“I did. She was making the roof of my mouth itch. You should’ve checked her. If I were Kierra, I would’ve thought you liked the attention.”

“I barely glimpsed her presence,” Jonathan argued, returning his cell phone to his pocket. I noticed he was on his phone throughout breakfast and figured it was either work-related or related to our trip.

“If you say so,” Anthony replied smugly.

“Attention, passengers, we’ll be taking off in ten minutes. Persons not on the flight manifest should depart now,” Captain Martin announced over the speaker above our heads.

“I guess that’s our cue to leave. Come on, rugrats. I’m going to teach you kids how to build ships in a bottle.”

Anthony sounds like someone’s grandpa.

Kiyah hooked her arms around my neck and hugged me tightly. “Bye, Mommy. Have fun.”

“Thank you, Ki. I’ll miss you so much.”

“I’ll miss you, too. I love you.”

“I love you more, Ki.”

I kissed her repeatedly before releasing her and spent the next few minutes saying my goodbyes to the rest of the kids and reminding them that Christmas was around the corner and if they weren’t careful, they’d end up on the “Naughty List.”

Five minutes later, the doors were secured, and the jet was taxiing down the runway.

“Are you okay?” I asked Jonathan, noticing how quiet he’d been during breakfast.

“I’m fine. I was giving Cara instructions before we take extended leave through the holidays.”

My eyes widened in surprise. “Extended leave?”

“I cleared all my cases and want to take a break and spend time with my family. I’ll return to work after things are settled with Eliza.”

“I’m sure the kids will love having you home.”

“Just the kids?” he asked with a raised eyebrow.

“I’ll love having you home, too. You know what that means?”

“Enlighten me.”

“I get to sleep in.”

“Not if you’re sleeping in my room,” he responded with a mischievous smile as he slid towards me.

“Thanks for reminding me to sleep in my bedroom with the door locked. Are you going to tell me where we’re going?”
