A snarl lifted her lips, her teeth like daggers, her nails like scythes.

Her eyes flickered fire-red. Eyes I had seen before and recognized they only meant one thing.

Death.

Chapter 24

Raven

“Ash!” His name tore from my lips, his body lurching in front of me, dropping to his knees as the bullet ripped through his stomach. The sound of the gun rang in my ears, the intangible terror wrapping around my lungs while chaos danced around me, though I barely comprehended it.

I could smell his blood in my nose, taste it on my tongue, his life and energy bleeding from him while he still fought, trying to protect me.

They. Hurt. Him. Fury scorched my lungs, stilling me to the point time slowed down, incinerating everything but my need to protect. To kill what was hurting…mine.

I heard it growl in my throat. Possessive and deadly. My muscles vibrated with energy, magic pushing so hard against the cage of the bracelet that vomit pooled in the back of my throat.

Gunfire volleyed around me, ricocheting off the stone walls and ground, zipping by me… and at any moment, one of those shells could take Ash away from me.

“Take it.” My voice was low and lethal, commanding someone I could not see. But somehow, I knew she heard me. She was near. “Take it, Talyssa, I give it to you.A gift.” Gifts were a weakness to spirits. They could never turn away from a gift.

Energy buzzed next to me at my bequest, feeling the spirit’s fingers touch my wrists, her energy skimming my skin, the Vâlve’s magic coiling over my arm.

A bullet hit the dirt right at my feet, barely missing Ash.

I no longer cared or feared what I was letting loose. They would fear me.

“Now,” I snarled and snapped.

Clink.

The spelled cuff loosened from my arm, dropping to the floor with a thud, freeing me of the heavy weight I carried. The creature I contained. Like a dam breaking, my magic flooded in, filling me with power, crashing into me like a storm.

“No! Raven!” Eve’s cry snapped my head up to hers, her eyes widening in terror, knowing what was happening. She was the only one here who really knew what I was capable of. Had seen what I could do.

A stab of trepidation sizzled my veins at her terror, understanding I no longer had control of myself. Free from the cage I put myself in. Magic poured into my system, burning through my veins and searing up my vertebrae. Blades pushed out from my spine, tearing through my clothes like daggers.

A pull I couldn’t even describe dragged my attention to the man on the ground, zeroing in on him. But then my nose picked up the scent of his blood, spilling out from his stomach and a cut across his cheek.

My brain shut off, my instincts taking over, wanting to destroy anything that harmed him.

“Raven! Don’t!” Eve pleaded, her legs already retreating. She knew to run, to get far away, which only encouraged my nature.

Magic sparked behind my lids, my eyesight sharpening, allowing me to see through the darkness to better hunt my prey.

A deep growl came from my gut, my lip lifting, showing long canine teeth as dark energy swarmed around me, resembling thick fog.

My mouth parted in a hissed curse… and I no longer was me.

I was the monster of their nightmares.

Chapter 25

Ash

Eve’s scream bounced off the ceilings and walls, her legs tripping up the stairs as a deep noise gurgled from Raven.

Raven.
