“We did think that Dewey was the driver,” Kaj admitted. “But you said that my sister had fallen down and that wasn’t in any of the videos, so I knew that you were there that night. I figured that you were simply in the van, but then Elijah recognized your eyes.”

The air grew uncomfortably tense. No doubt the three men were thinking the same thing Val was: Who’s the leak in the NOPD?

Val typed a text to Antoine. Can you find out why Bobby Landry left NOPD? We have a leak. Someone is feeding info about Cardozo and his son. Maybe to Bobby.

On it, Antoine replied.

Jace squared his shoulders. “What’s gonna happen to me now?”

Metairie, Louisiana

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2:15 A.M.

“Where the fuck is he?” Corey growled, beyond frustrated.

After Ed and Corey had taken Allyson back to the boat launch and watched her drive away, they’d met up with Bobby, who’d just found Dewey’s jon boat floating downstream—no Jace aboard. Dewey’s truck was gone, too, and they’d known that Jace had truly escaped.

Ed had gone back to the camp to watch over Dianne, and Corey and Bobby had taken Ed’s Chevy SUV to search for the little bastard. They’d driven all over town looking for Dewey’s pickup, but Jace wasn’t anywhere that they’d checked.

They’d even started to drive by Corey’s house, but there were two cruisers parked on the curb and a third in the driveway. The police were still watching his house, with an even greater presence than before. Like they’d learned something new. That wasn’t too hard to guess. Jace had run straight to the cops. Fuck you, Jace.

They’d abruptly detoured and now sat in the parking lot of a twenty-four-hour grocery store. Bobby was behind the wheel and Corey rode shotgun, each trying to keep it together.

This was very, very bad.

Bobby shoved his fingers through his hair, something he did when he was at his limit. But when he spoke, it wasn’t with anger. It was with quiet fear. “Jace went to the cops.”

Corey’s gut twisted and he cursed himself for not killing Jace when they’d returned from Cardozo’s. “Probably. He was really upset about Rick. He figured out he was dead.”

“And Dewey,” Bobby murmured. “If Jace saw us kill him... He loved that old bastard. He was always tagging along after Dewey whenever he came to fix our trucks and stuff.”

“You’re right. We have to assume he’s told the cops about Rick and Dewey.” Especially with the cruisers in front of his house. No one had tripped the alarm, so they hadn’t entered yet, but it was only a matter of time before they got the necessary warrants.

“We should park our vehicles off in the trees behind the boat launch in case the cops do come looking,” Bobby said. “No need to hand over our wheels if we don’t have to.”

“And Zach’s car,” Corey reminded him. “We’ll have to dispose of it. But we have to also assume that Jace will tell them about the camp. We need to find a new place.”

Bobby frowned. “Please don’t say we’re going to your lake camp. I hate that place.”

Corey’s other property wasn’t on Lake Cataouatche, but on one of the small tributaries that ran from the lake through the swamp. “I know it’s not a Holiday Inn, but—”

“It’s one step up from a tent and pissing in the woods.” Bobby scowled. “We are going there, aren’t we? Dammit, Corey.”

“I’ll tell Ed to move Dianne and all of our records to the lake camp. The cops will find Aaron’s stuff and accuse us of being in on his business. We need to destroy his and Dewey’s buildings. And ours. We have to bring it all down. We have enough explosives.”

Bobby looked pained. “Even your quarters?”

“Even my quarters. You spilled a lot of Dewey’s blood in the comm room.”

“He deserved it.”

Corey pinched the bridge of his nose. Sometimes dealing with Bobby was like dealing with a toddler. “Any CSI guy worth his salt will find traces of Dewey’s blood and maybe blood from the others we’ve killed there.” They cleaned after each murder, but there would be trace evidence. “They’d be able to pin a lot of murders on us. Right now, it’s just Dewey and Rick, and the cops think both of them are drug dealers, so I don’t see them looking all that hard for their killers. If they get blood from all of our other victims, though... Well, I’m not going to let that happen. So we take it all down unless you have another plan.”

“No, but... dammit. We just got the place the way we wanted it.”

“And when I get my hands on Jace, he’ll pay for that, too. The lake camp is livable for now. It’s got a generator and running water. We’ll grab the satellite dish before we set off the charges. We’ll rebuild. You’ll like it even better. I promise.”

“Fine. But when you do find that little bastard, I want a piece of him, too.”
