Molly tapped a spoon to her cup. It was plastic and didn’t carry the sound as well as glass, but everyone laughed. “We made it through,” she said, echoing Kaj’s thoughts.
Everyone’s thoughts, probably. It was hard not to think about how lucky they’d been.
“And now,” Molly continued, “we’ve made our family a little bigger. So here’s to Kaj, Elijah, Jace, and Sylvi. Welcome.”
“Welcome” was the resounding reply.
Kaj couldn’t speak. His throat was too tight.
“He says thank you,” Elijah said cheekily, making everyone laugh.
But Jace was staring at everyone with wonder and Kaj had to agree.
He’d lived in another city his entire life, but at this moment, he’d never felt so much at home.
