Kaj’s pulse began to pick up speed. “Where?”

“On the bayou. Close to Lake Cataouatche.”

“You’ll have to be a little more specific, Mr.Gates. The area around Cataouatche has been searched.”

“It’s a little tributary. Hard to find without a guide. I could find it for you.”

Kaj blew out an impatient breath. “Do you want Corey arrested or not? If you do, tell me what you know. Because you know we’re not taking you with us as a guide.”

Aaron grinned. “It was worth a try. The property belonged to an old friend. Ivan Kristiansen. He left it to me.”

Kaj couldn’t control his shock. His mouth dropped open and he snapped it shut.

Aaron’s eyes narrowed. “You know him?”

“He came up in a conversation with Sandra Springfield,” Kaj said.

Color flooded Aaron’s face, a vein abruptly throbbing in his temple. “She talked to you?” He lunged at Kaj, but one of the officers shoved him back down. “You’re lying.”

“We’re done,” the defense attorney said. “Please leave. I need to talk with my client.”

Kaj stood and took a step back, keeping Aaron in his sight. He didn’t breathe again until he was in the hallway with the interview room door closed behind them.

Phin immediately straightened. “Are you all right?”

Reuben was frowning at him. “Does Miss Sorensen know about this property? It was her brother’s, after all.”

Kaj looked at Phin first. “I’m okay. Just surprised. Aaron kind of lost it there at the end. Reuben, I’m sure she doesn’t know. She would have volunteered the location if she’d known. I need to get home.” They needed to search for that property. “You’ll personally check on Rick?”

“I said I would.” Because Reuben had said no outright when Kaj had asked to visit. “We’ll see you on Monday?”

For the trial of Bella Butler’s rapist. “Absolutely.”

Kaj said nothing more until he’d reached their vehicle, Burke’s highly secure Escalade. “I’ll sit up front on the way back. It doesn’t matter if they see me coming back in, does it?”

“Maybe, but I don’t want them seeing you, period. Duck your head down when we get close.” Phin opened the front passenger door for Kaj, then opened the hatch to retrieve his gun from a safe bolted to the floor at the rear of the SUV.

“Where to?” Phin asked when he was behind the wheel.

“My house. But first I need to call Burke.” Kaj dialed Burke’s number and the man picked up immediately. “Aaron said that Corey has another property on a tributary off Lake Cataouatche. Says it was owned by Ivan Kristiansen.”

Burke gasped. “You’re fucking kidding me.”

“Nope. Aaron smirked and said that Ivan ‘left it to him.’ ”

“I’m starting a property search as we speak. You’re coming home?”

“We’re in the car now. See you soon.” Kaj ended the call. Phin was staring at him, the vehicle still in park.

“Ivan Kristiansen? That’s Val’s brother? How did he leave property to Aaron Gates?”

Kaj sighed. “How much do you know about Val’s brother?”

“Not much. I know he was killed trying to keep Sylvi from buying drugs or something like that, but that he was also using. I know that Val and Sylvi have made up. Something else is going on, but I didn’t ask questions. Val looked... fragile last night.”

“She was.” Until they were in bed together. Then she’d transformed back into the strong woman he was quickly falling for. “Val’s brother and Aaron worked together in a financial firm for a few years. Ivan was also the leader of Sixth Day before Aaron took over.”

Phin’s eyes widened. “Holy shit. That’s what she found out yesterday?”
