Then a lucid thought broke through Corey’s fog of pain. “We need to steal another car. The cops will be watching for this one.”

“Already on it,” Bobby promised. “I know where we can pick one up, and the owner won’t even know it’s gone until Saturday. It’s not far from here. We’ll keep to the back roads.”

Corey really didn’t have a choice. “We lost our chance to grab Cardozo and get him to tell us where Bella is. He’ll be guarded even more heavily from now on.”

“I know,” Bobby said grimly. “And we’re not in very good shape to launch another attack. You won’t have full use of your hand for at least a few weeks. Maybe longer.”

“Don’t need my left hand to shoot,” Corey muttered. “I want that blond bitch in my sights. She’ll be the first one I take down.”

“You got that right.” Bobby navigated the back roads, turning again and again, until Corey had lost track of their path.

“Who was the big guy there at the end?”

“I don’t know,” Bobby said. “We’re going to find out, because he’s on my list as well. I’m betting he works for Broussard. Another of his bodyguards.”

“Makes sense. Where are we going?”

“Old girlfriend’s house. She’s a flight attendant. She has the Trans-Pacific route that leaves on Thursday and returns on Saturday.”

“How long ago were you together?” Corey asked.

“We broke up a month before I left the force.”

“Four years ago? Are you crazy? She’s probably changed routes.”

Bobby flashed another lazy grin. “Of course I’m crazy. You’ve always known that. We’re not together anymore, but I still drop by every few weeks. She’s not shy about texting me for a booty call when she’s in the mood. When she’s on duty, she leaves her car in her garage and takes an Uber to the airport. I know where she keeps the extra key to her house and the keys to her car. Don’t worry. I have this.”

“I have nothing but worry. Cardozo was our best option to find Bella Butler and he’s slipped through our fingers.” Along with any plans Corey had made for his future.

He had to finish this job. He had to find Bella. And then he’d do what it took to force her to recant. She would not win this war. She would not make him fail.

“We’re here.” Bobby pulled into the driveway of a small house on a quiet street, leaving the motor running. “I’ll be just a minute. Keep your head down.”

Corey slumped down so that his head wasn’t visible, the movement making his arm throb. The image of strangling the blond bitch with his bare hands filled his mind.

“Goddamn woman.” He wasn’t going to simply kill her. He’d make her pay for what she’d done. She would suffer. He’d see to it.

But he didn’t have to take care of Val Sorensen now. He could kill her when his hand healed. All he needed to do was find Bella Butler.

Corey lifted his head when a garage door rumbled and rose. Inside was a black Volvo.

Perfect. Nobody would be looking for them in a Volvo.

Bobby slid into the driver’s seat beside him and shook a medicine bottle. “I raided her medicine cabinet. Found some oxy so you can knock yourself out. Take one.”

“I will, once we have Bella.”

Bobby sighed wearily. “Fine.”

Corey glared at him. “What does that mean?”

“It means that we’re all banged up. We’re going to need to overpower Allyson to bring her in if we expect to keep any of the respect we’ve built. And we still need to get Cardozo—or someone—to tell us where to find Bella.”

“Fine,” Corey grunted. “So let’s go.”

“Not yet. We’re going to get that bullet out first.”

Corey cringed. “You’re going to do it?”
