Holmes shook his head. “Not at the moment.”

“Not tonight,” Cardozo added. He crossed the room, stopping in front of Jace and squeezing his shoulder. “You’re safe here. The only people who know you’re here aren’t telling anyone your location. I need to share some information with Burke and Val. André’s going to take you into the garage for a few minutes, that’s all.”

Jace nodded, partially relieved. He still wasn’t sure that he’d be staying here, but nobody had lied to him yet. He rose and Holmes escorted him into the garage. The two chairs Lucien had set up the night before—when Mr.Cardozo and Captain Holmes were discussing where Jace would go—were still there, and Jace sank onto one of them. “Is Rick all right?”

“He is,” Holmes said. “He’s in a protected area of the jail, being guarded. No other prisoners can get to him.”

That should have made Jace feel better, but there was still a feeling of dread that he couldn’t shake. “Did I do something wrong?”

Holmes studied him for a long moment. “Did you?”

“I don’t know anymore. I think I’ve told you everything.”

Holmes turned one of the chairs around and straddled it. “Tell me about the two people who visited Corey’s camp last night.”

Jace panicked. “I did already. I told you everything.”

Holmes put a hand on his shoulder. “Breathe, Jace. I’m not accusing you of lying. I’m asking if there’s anything else you remember. You said there was a woman and a man.”

“Yes. That’s true.”

“Did you hear them say anything?”

Jace replayed the scene in his mind once again. “Corey was waiting for them on the dock. He welcomed them to his camp. The woman said that she didn’t feel welcome, and was being blindfolded really necessary. Corey didn’t yell at her, which surprised me. He’d have beat us good for talking to him like that. He just said that they had a lot to talk about.”

“Did the man say anything?”

“Not that I heard, sir.”

“Do you think you’d remember the woman’s voice if you heard it again?”

“Maybe. I’m pretty good at remembering voices. Rick and I would play a game where one of us would play a sound clip from a movie and the other would have to guess the actor and the movie. I won nearly every time.”

Holmes smiled at him. “That could be a useful skill, Jace. What did they look like?”

“I wasn’t really looking at them directly,” he admitted. “I’d just seen them kill Dewey. It was... hard to look.”

“I can understand that. Was Talley the first person you saw killed?”

“In person. I mean, I saw Aaron beat that doctor up, but that was on video.”

“What did you think about that?”

Jace sighed. “Aaron hated him. Was always talking about how Dr.Singh killed Liam.”

“Did he?”

“He didn’t save Liam, but that’s not the same as killing him. I tried to tell that to Aaron, but Corey told me to shut up.” He grimaced. “And then Corey gave me a beating.”

Holmes winced. “I’m sorry.”

Jace shrugged. “It’s okay. It hurt, but I’m used to it.”

“No one should ever have to get used to that,” Holmes said, his voice a deep rumble. “I’m sorry no one protected you, Jace.”

Jace wasn’t sure what to say to that. “Thank you?”

Holmes nodded once. “Do you remember what the man and woman were wearing when they showed up at the camp?”
