I lean back again, looking down at my dick disappearing into her, then sliding out, covered in her juices. That drives me over the edge. I groan as my come shoots up my dick, a river of passion exploding out of me. She screams, her pussy pulsing around me, both of us lost in the pleasure.

After, I fall next to her, my chest heaving, my head feeling light, and not from the concussion. As I bring her into my arms, I almost tell her what I did earlier when the hospital let me out. She thinks I came straight here to meet her, but I made one stop first.

“You’re perfect,” I whisper, hugging her close and kissing her on the cheek.

“That was perfect,” she says, nuzzling closer to me.

CHAPTER 35

Lexi

My hand trembles as I stare down at the photo. Shadow is staring at me, waiting for his treat, but part of me wonders if he did this purposefully. After the sex, Colt fell asleep, so I just nuzzled closer to him and stayed like that until I heard Shadow scratching against the door.

He led me through the apartment to a drawer in the office with a bag of treats and something else. Something that makes my heart pound so hard it hurts. I’ve gone from the happiest I’ve ever been to something else, something poisoned.

A beautiful, model-like woman stares up at me, a baby in her arms. There’s dark ink across the bottom. I will never love anybody else. I grab the photo and turn it over. It’s like some sick self-sabotaging instinct touches me.

There’s more writing. Shadow yaps, but I can’t look at him. Natasha… This handwriting is manlier, somehow. It’s Colt’s. You’ll always be my one and only for as long as I live. Even if you died and I found somebody else, I’d always be thinking of you. Love always, Colt x

A shudder runs through me. Can I be mad? Of course, he has a past, but he said I was the only one he felt this way about—just me.

Suddenly, I’m on my feet, storming through the apartment. I burst open the bedroom door. Colt sits up, looking lazy and happy with his sleep, his smile turning to terror when he sees me holding the photo.

“So this was never about me,” I say, breaking my heart right down the middle. It’s a funny thing—not haha, but ironic—because I never had a heart before I met him. “Was it, Colt? Don’t close up on me now.”

He tries to evade it. We argue, and I hardly hear what he says or even what I say. I focus on grabbing my clothes. Part of me knows this is a mistake. He’s been through so much, done so much. Yet I can’t think of him loving another woman, wanting her, promising to think of her when he’s with me. I leave the apartment.

Then, the door bursts open behind me. “I’m not letting you leave again,” he growls, wearing a pair of shorts, nothing else, his chest heaving. “That photo really isn’t what you think. I shouldn’t have kept it, but it reminds me.”

Tears sting my eyes. “Of her?”

“Of who I am,” he snaps. “Just let me explain. Give me a goddamn chance.”

He moves forward, wrapping his arm around my waist. I let him guide me back to the apartment. He takes me into the living room, sits me down, takes his hands in mine, and holds them tightly.

“Eleven years ago,” he says, “I worked for the Serpents in Vegas.” His tone is dark. I want to tell him to stop. He’s been through too much already, but I have to know. “I didn’t know just how bad they were. When I found out, I went to war with them. At one point, the sadistic assholes caught me. They… they kept me on one of their compounds out in the desert.”

He swallows, his hands trembling.

“It’s okay,” I whisper, his hurt filling the room, filling my heart. “Oh, Colt.”

“They wanted to make me one of them, so they got one of their so-called princesses, Natasha. They tried to force me to be with her, but I wouldn’t, even when they tortured me. So they forced me to… to donate something, instead.”

He swallows, shivering, as sick images fill my mind—threats and blackmail to get what they wanted. “They got Natasha pregnant with my child, my daughter. They knew I’d be loyal to her, to them, that way.” He blinks, his eyes glistening, but his jaw is clenched and hard. “And that’s right. A man should always be loyal to his family, but I had to try to escape. I had to… and I failed. I failed the first time, the time that mattered.”

I take both his hands in mine, no doubt in my mind or heart that he’s telling the truth. I move closer to him. So they made him do it.
