Then a cooing sound came from a patch of flowers a bit further away.

Min parted the leaves, and gasped.

There lay a chubby, soft-skinned pink baby. A fully human baby.

He lay gurgling in a patch of pansies, holding onto his toes and staring at them in awe.

“Theo,” Min whispered. “Is that you? Are you in there?”

And then she realized, Theo wasn’t in there, hiding. This was Theo. One side of Theo. Just as real as his baby dragon form. He’d shifted into fully human form.

He hadn’t been born with twilight features for a reason.

Because he was always going to shift when the time was right.

He blinked out of huge, long-lashed brown eyes, his eyelids sweeping up. And down.

“Oh, my goddess, Ethan. Come quickly!” Min called.

Ethan was at her side in seconds. They both stared, rapt, speechless for long moments.

“Oh, goddess be blessed,” Ethan finally rasped out.

At which their son gurgled and lifted his chubby little hands up.

“Min. He’s shifted.”

“Yes, I—I can’t believe it.”

“Will he—I mean, what now? Will he turn back to his dragon form again?”

“Yes, I guess so. At some stage.”

“But when? how?”

“Ethan, I have no idea. This is new to both of us.”

As she went to pick him up, Theo giggled. There was a flash of green light and he flitted out of the bushes in dragon form. He landed, then bounced along the lawn on his chubby green little butt, tail flying behind him.

They ran after him. “Heck, this is going to keep us on our toes,” Ethan panted.

A matter of seconds later, Theo was rolling around holding his human toes, a chubby glistening little ball of human baby, crowing with delight at his own cleverness.

“I guess he probably can’t maintain his human form for long, but he’s playing with it.” Min laughed, clapping her hands together.

“Heck, now what?” Ethan stood scratching his head scales.

“I guess we wing it,” Min said. “This is the first time this has happened in… literally centuries, Ethan. There’s no rule book.”

“I guess we’ll cope, the way all first-time parents cope.”

“He’s our baby boy and we’ll love him however this works out,” Min said firmly as she went to pick him up. Holding him in human form was just as wonderful as holding him in dragon form.

Ethan came and stroked his cheek in wonderment. “He’s beautiful, just like you.”

“Oh dear.” Min handed him to Ethan, and he stuck a pudgy little fist in Ethan’s eye, then squirmed so much that Ethan had to put him down. As they watched, he started to crawl. “Will you just look at that?” Ethan said proudly. “Though maybe with the work this one is about to give us, we should put off our plans for number two.”

Min bit her lip and said nothing.
