Ah, sensible Min was back in the driving seat.

“It’s been six weeks,” he corrected.

“Oh Ethan, that’s… no time, really, is it?”

“Does time define what we have Min? You and I had something the moment we first met. And it feels like time has nothing to do with it.” He wanted to say it transcends time, but he knew that would sound kind of woo woo. “It felt like we were meant to be together from that first meeting.”

“Yes.” Her voice was small. “And you know I felt the same. But maybe… maybe we were primed to find each other attractive, because we were fake-dating…”

“You know that’s not true.”

She let out a whispered sigh of assent.

“You don’t want to marry me. Is that what you’re saying?”

“No, Ethan, I absolutely do, it’s just my cautious nature coming to the fore. Apparently my mom was like that.”

“I get that. But Min I’m supposed to announce our engagement at the gala dinner, to ensure the contract is approved.”

She nodded “I know.”

“And when I do, you need to know it’s not one iota fake, that even if this deal fell on its face tomorrow, I would want you by my side, as my mate, forever.”

“Oh Ethan.” Her voice caught. “I want that too, more than anything in the world.”

She reached up and kissed him.

As he kissed her back, his heart sang. Because tomorrow he would tell the world he was with Min, honestly, openly, no more lies.

Just the simple, beautiful truth.

That he loved Minerva Westwind with all his heart.

CHAPTER 25

Tonight was the big night, the annual Blade gala dinner, and as Min got ready, it was hard to believe that her month of fake dating Ethan was almost over.

Except, truthfully, it hadn’t been fake for either of them, had it?

After tonight, having wined and dined and entertained 500 monsters and humans and, for the first time ever, representatives from the Council of Towns, the deal would be in the bag.

Ethan’s company would own a great swathe of human land north of Motham City, enabling him to fulfil his father’s dreams.

And their relationship would be really real.

Min smiled to herself, remembering their arguments over whether she would get paid. Now he was mumbling that he would gift her the Westerly as a wedding present.

A knock on the door cut through her thoughts. It was Ebony.

Min had asked her to come up and give her some last-minute advice on her outfit.

Ebony looked her up and down admiringly. “You look absolutely stunning. But I really think you shouldn’t wear glasses tonight. Do you have contacts?” she asked, tapping her beak thoughtfully with one of her shellacked claws.

“I do, but I don’t often wear them. I don’t like touching my eyeballs.” She hated slipping them into her eyes, and even worse, fishing them out, but tonight she wanted to lose her studious look, so she decided to take Ebony’s advice.

After she’d blinked them in, she came out of the bathroom, and Ebony said, “Brilliant. And the gown you’ve picked is amazing. Almost on a par with a Kominsky design—except after what happened last year, you couldn’t possibly wear a Kominsky dress. That would be a big black mark against Blade Wing Air, and we can’t have anything go against Ethan right now.

“What exactly happened? With the Kominskys?”
