Ethan’s eyebrows shot up. “Your cat? Now I think I might be insulted.”

She decided not to tell him that Gingerbread slept curled up on the bed next to her most nights. Instead, she said, “And I’m sure the bathroom door has a lock on it, doesn’t it?”

“No. But I’ll get one fitted.”

“No, don’t worry, we’ll just use a sign. Or I can call, ‘human in unicorn PJs desperate for a pee.’” Min dimpled, and their eyes met and danced. And then suddenly they were both outright laughing.

“Ethan, really, it’ll work out. I’m already feeling at home here. I um, saw Beau again this morning, by the way. We had a very pleasant chat.”

Ethan raised an eyebrow. “What about?” His blue eyes were curious.

“Oh, you know, his studies.” That was kind of true.

“I bet he told you that he doesn’t like his course. And that it’s all my fault.”

“Yeah, well, he did say it wasn’t really his thing.”

“Did he mention his gaming obsession?”

“Oh, er, not really,” Min said quickly. “He’s a nice kid, you know, Ethan. Under his bravado.”

“Yeah, well, I wish he’d show me his nice side.” His face tightened. Time to change the subject, Min decided.

“So us rooming together, that’s settled then?” she said brightly.

“Yes. Seems so.” He looked relieved. “Thank you, Min, I really appreciate your understanding about this.” He made a move toward the door.

For some reason she really wanted to keep him here, chatting. “When is our next formal engagement?”

His face tightened again. “Next Friday. The intimate dinner à deux. In the garden.”

“And being photographed kissing in the bushes.” She giggled nervously.

“Yes, we’ve employed a photographer who’s known for his celebrity shots.” He ruffled his head scales. “I’m asking a lot of you Min, more than you signed up for.”

“Don’t forget you’re helping me too. We’re both doing this to fulfil our parents’ dreams,” she said gently.

His lips twisted ruefully. “Glad you see it that way. Well then, I guess I’ll go back to work. And Min?—”

“Yes?” She stood up from the bed, hopeful, though for what, she didn’t really know.

“Thank you for being so accommodating.” He strode to the door, then turned to face her. “And—for…”

She cocked her head and held her breath, waiting.

“Just being… you.” And then, before she could reply, he was gone.

CHAPTER 14

“Why are you still at work? Don’t you have the romantic dinner with Min tonight?”

Ebony poked her beak around the door of his office, her head cocked and her eyes bright and beady.

“I’m giving her space to get ready.”

Ebony strolled into the office. “How’s rooming together going?”

“We’re making it work,” Ethan said stiffly, avoiding her curious gaze.
